READING, Pa. - The pitching duo of Hood College's
Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, MD/North County) and
Jordan Long (Middletown, MD/Middletown) limited Albright to just one run on seven hits over the course of a doubleheader sweep by the Blazers, who won 9-1 and 2-0.
Inside the Circle
- Gottleib limited Albright to just one hit and two walks in a five-inning complete game in the opener. She struck out seven and allowed just one run.
- Long tossed her first shutout of the season in game two, striking out six and allowing six singles.
At the Plate
- Gottleib and Cailyn Barthlow (Libertytown, MD/Linganore) each finished the day 4-for-8. Gottleib drove in four runs, while Barthlow had two RBIs in game one. Barthlow had the lone extra-base hit for Hood, a game one double.
Hood 9, Albright 1 (5 innings)
- After allowing a run in the first inning, Gottleib faced one batter over the minimum over the remainder of the game, opening the door for the Blazers' offense to end the game early.
- Hood took the lead in the top of the second. The Blazers strung together five singles in the inning. Gottleib led off the inning with a base hit and scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Alyssa Walters (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford). Brandi Davidson (Northampton, PA/Northampton) knocked in Mallorie Hetzel (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) with an RBI single to make it 2-1.
- The Blazers broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning, with all five runs crossing home plate with two outs. Barthlow doubled with two outs, scoring Walters and Colleen Blasko (Bowie, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) to stretch the lead to 4-1. Joceyln Pfleiger, Rachel Benden (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) and Gottleib followed with consecutive base hits drive in three more for a six-run edge.
- Hood scored two more in the fifth and Gottleib pitched a 1-2-3 fifth, striking out the last two hitters to seal the win.
Hood 2, Albright 0
- The Blazers scored single runs in the first and third innings, which proved to be more than enough for Long, who shut out the Lions for the second straight season.
- With two outs in the top of the first, Pfleiger walked and Benden singled ahead of Gottleib. The first-year student drove in Pfleiger with a base hit for a 1-0 lead.
- Benden and Gottleib helped Hood score again in the third. Barthlow as on first with one out when Benden singled two put two runners on. Gottleib drove in another run with her second hit of the game for a two-run advantage.
- The Lions picked up a pair of hits in the bottom of the third, but Long forced a ground ball to short to end the threat. The sophomore struck out the side in the fourth before pitching out of trouble in the fifth. Brooke Franklin, Massiel Del Orbe and Allison Melahn all singled to load the bases with two outs. Long forced a fly ball to right field to put the comeback bid to a halt.
- She retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh for her third complete game of the year.
For the Lions
- Melahn had four of Albright's seven hits, including three in game two. She also pitched in both contests. She came on in relief in the opener, allowing two runs in 1.1 innings. Melahn was the starter in game two and took the loss, allowing two runs over 4.2 innings of work.
- Laura Costello was the losing pitcher in game one. She started and allowed seven runs in 3.2 innings.
- Jadelyn Van Winkle closed out game two for Albright and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings.
Notes
- Hood improved to 16-17-1 overall and 6-8 in the MAC Commonwealth.
- Albright slipped to 3-23 and 2-10.
