YORK, Pa. - The Hood College baseball team dropped the first game of its two-game Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth series against York College of Pennsylvania 14-2.
At the Plate
- Jacob Saylor (Walkersville, MD/Walkersville) reached base two times in three at-bats and scored once in the game.
- AJ Haines (Arlington, VA/Bishop O'Connell) recorded an RBI on the afternoon.
- Matt Schopf (Middletown, PA/Middletown) hit a double.
- Alex Jenkins (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) and Sam Wheeler (Sayre, PA/Sayre) both walked.
On the Mound
- Matthew Stout (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) started the game and took the loss, allowing six runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.
- Frank Spaide (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) was first out of the bullpen, giving up three runs on one hit.
- Scott Ash (Middletown, PA/Middletown) came in to pitch in the fifth inning, letting in four runs on two hits. He also walked three batters.
- Gabe Rivera (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) was the bright spot on the mound, throwing the final three innings. He gave up only one run on one hit.
York (Pa.) 14, Hood 2
- York did not waste time to get on the board in the first inning. Robby Elzinga started the game with a walk, Joe Capobianco followed with a two-run homer to left center. The Spartans took an early 2-0 lead.
- Capobianco, Andrew Santarpia and Michael Tinnery all had RBI singles during a four-run third inning for York (Pa.) that extended the Spartans' lead to 6-0.
- Hood's offense was silent until the fourth inning. Saylor singled to the shortstop, and moved to second on a throwing error. He later scored on another error when York threw the ball away after Keegan Brennan (Lake Wynonah, PA/Nativity BVM) fouled out to second base deep in foul territory.
- The Spartans scored three more runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 9-1. Capobianco recorded his fourth RBI of the game in the inning and Jack Barry hit a two-run homer.
- York added four runs in one swing in the fifth, as Elzinga hit a grand slam over the fence in right center field.
- The Spartans last run came in the eighth inning, as Chris Nesensohn reached on a fielder's choice that scored Bryce Shaffer.
- Hood got a run in the ninth on a Haines single through the left side that drove in Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford).
For the Opponent
- Capobianco had a big game for the Spartans, going 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored.
- Elzinga hit a grand slam, scored three times, and walked twice.
- Barry had a home run and two RBIs.
- Zach Reed started the game for the Spartans, allowing one run on three hits in seven innings of work. He also struck out two and walked two getting the win.
- Sam Gardner struck out two in a flawless eighth inning.
- Joey DiQuollo gave up one run on one hit in the ninth inning.
Notes
- Hood falls to 10-25 overall and 3-10 in the MAC Commonwealth.
- York (Pa.) improved to 17-16 and 8-5.
