FREDERICK, Md. - With two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the ninth, Hood College's
Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) singled to center field for the walk-off win, driving in
Alex Jenkins (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) for 4-3 win in the second game of a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader against Widener. The Pride took game one 12-1.
At the Plate
- Sam Wheeler (Sayre, PA/Sayre) led the Blazers at the plate in the doubleheader, going 3-for-5 with an RBI.
- Stephen Sommer (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun) recorded two doubles and an RBI on the day.
- Matt Schopf (Middletown, PA/Middletown) and Schwarzman each had an RBI.
- Jenkins finished the day with a double, an RBI, and scored once in game two.
- Keegan Brennan (Lake Wynonah, PA/Nativity BVM) had two stolen bases on a two-hit day. The first-year student also picked up a pair of assists in right field.
On the Mound
- Gabe Rivera (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) started game one for the Blazers, allowing six runs on four hits in 5.1 innings. He walked four and took the loss.
- Cole Whitton (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) gave up one run on two hits in 0.2 of an inning.
- Scott Ash (Middletown, PA/Middletown) threw a perfect seventh inning.
- Jacob Cutter (Indianapolis, IN/Greenwood Community) gave up five runs on three hits in 1.1 innings.
- Trey Baker (Hagerstown, MD/Williamsport) finished the ninth inning, giving up one hit.
- Gavin Pollard (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) got the start in game two, and allowed one run on three hits. He also struck out two batters in two innings of work.
- Frank Spaide (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) threw a scoreless third and fourth inning.
- Nick Rampone (Mendham, NJ/Randolph) gave up one run on one hit in the fifth inning.
- Matthew Stout (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) struck out one and walked on in two innings.
- Ash appeared again in relief in game two and gave up one run on two hits. He walked four and received the win for the Blazers.
Widener 12, Hood 1
- Widener grabbed the lead on a wild pitch that scored Nick Barenz in the third inning as the Pride took a 1-0 lead.
- The Blazers tied the game up in the bottom of the third, scoring their only run of the game. Jenkins hit a one out single into left center field and later came home on a Sommer double down the left field line.
- Aaron Nuble walked in the sixth inning, stole two bases, and came home on an Anthony Boccio single. Following an error by Rivera that landed Boccio on third base, he scored on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning. Widener ended the inning with a Nick Barenz grand slam that put the game out of reach, 7-1.
- In the ninth inning, Nuble hit a two-run homer that knocked in Kyle Brex, and Justin Costanzo hit a home run of his own two batters later. Matt Samson singled to drive in a run, and the final run of the inning came on Alex Savkov sacrifice fly that brought in Ryan Weaver. That capped off a five-run inning for the Pride to stretch the lead to 12-1.
Hood 4, Widener 3
- Widener took the lead early in game two, scoring one run in the second inning on a Barenz RBI single.
- Hood took its first lead of the afternoon in the fourth inning scoring two runs. Sommer hit a double down the left field line and Jacob Saylor (Walkersville, MD/Walkersville) was hit by a pitch.Both runners advanced on a wild pitch to set up a Schopf sacrifice fly that scored Sommer. Wheeler finished the inning with a two-out single down the right field line that brought in Saylor.
- In the fifth inning, the Pride tied the game up at two. Brex led off the inning with a bunt single and stole third. After a Boccio hit-by-pitch, scored on another wild pitch.
- Brennan led off the bottom of the fifth with a single through the left side. After stealing second, he advanced to third on a pick off attempt that got away. Brennan scored on an error by Morgan in left field to take a 3-2 lead going into the last four innings.
- The Pride were down to their final two outs in the ninth when Brex and Nuble both drew walks to keep the inning alive. Hood had a chance to end the game, but an error by Sommer enabled Brex to score on the play and Widener tied the game up in the ninth inning 3-3.
- Hood did not quit as Jenkins hit a lead-off double, over the left fielder's head, representing the game winning run. Schwarzman came up with two outs, and knocked in Jenkins with a single up the middle to walk off the game with a score of 4-3.
For the Opponent
- Barenz led Widener at the plate, going 4-for-6 in the doubleheader with five RBIs and a home run.
- Nuble recorded a home run, two RBIs, scored twice and had two stolen bases in game one.
- Costanzo had a home run and scored twice in game one.
- Brex scored three times, and had three stolen bases on the afternoon.
- Joey Norton threw a complete game for the Pride in game one, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out five and walked one.
- Liam Nihill got the start in game two, and struck out three, as he was perfect through three.
- Sean Curran struggled in 3.2 innings, giving up three runs on five hits.
- Toby Hallman pitched 0.2 of an inning and struck out one.
- Aidan O'Brien took the loss for the Pride, in 1.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits.
