Three home runs not enough at LVC

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Hood College's Alyssa Walters homered in both games and Jocelyn Pfleiger tied the school's single-season home run record but the softball team fell 11-5 in game one and 6-5 in eight innings in the second game at Lebanon Valley.

At the Plate
  • Pfleiger hit her eighth home run of the year in game two, tying the record set previously by both Melanie Muscar in 2003 and Kayli Paugh in 2016.
  • Walters finished the day 4-for-7 with two homers and five runs batted in. Her two-run shot in the top of the seventh in game two sent the contest into extra innings.
  • Rachel Benden added three hits in game two.
Inside the Circle
  • Benden was the starting pitcher in the nightcap and allowed six runs in 7.1 innings to take the complete game loss.
  • Rebecca Gottleib went the distance in game one and took the loss, surrendering 11 runs in six innings.
Lebanon Valley 11, Hood 5
  • Hood erased a two-run deficit with five runs in the sixth, but the Dutchmen answered with a nine-run bottom half of the inning for the win.
  • Walters' first homer of the day, a three-run shot, capped Hood's five-run sixth inning and gave the Blazers a 5-2 lead. Earlier in the sixth, Sammy McIntosh walked and scored on an RBI single by Pfleiger earlier in the inning before Gottleib and an infield single to drive in Cailyn Barthlow to tie the game.
  • Hood's lead was short-lived, however, as LVC plated nine runs on six singles, two doubles and a pair of walks in the bottom of the inning. Julia Forsythe tied the game with a two-out, RBI single to left, knocking in Sam Burns. The next five hitters all reached base to put the game out of reach. A two-run double by Kylie Balthaser and a single off the bat of Anna Marie Hockman drove in two runs apiece during the rally.
  • Morgan Comfort had RBI singles for LVC in the first and fifth innings for the game's only runs before the explosive sixth inning.
Lebanon Valley 6, Hood 5
  • Hood trailed 5-1 heading into the top of the seventh before rallying to send the game into extra innings. Walters hit the game-tying, two-run home run with two outs after the Blazers had already twice in the inning. Pfleiger reached on an error and a double by Benden put runners on second and third with one out. Gottleib knocked in Pfleiger with a sacrifice fly and Mallorie Hetzel brought in Benden with a single before scoring herself on Walters' home run.
  • Hood got two runners on the top of the eighth but did not score. Danni Holmes led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Lindsey McCurdy.
  • The Blazers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Pfleiger's record-tying home run.
  • LVC tied the game in the second inning when Balthasar doubled and scored on a hit by Hockman. McCurdy, Julia Craig and Jordan Hess started the third inning with back-to-back-to-back doubles to give the Dutchmen a 3-1 edge.
  • Hess doubled again in the fifth and scored on a Balthasar sacrifice fly. Hockman hit a run-scoring single with two outs in the inning to make it 5-1.
For the Opponent
  • Lebanon Valley had 29 hits over the two games, including three-hit games by Comfort, Balthasar and Lexi Smith in game one.
  • Hockman had two RBIs in each game.
  • Jordan Walter won game one with a complete game effort. She allowed five runs on six hits and two walks, striking out four. She entered the game in the seventh inning of game two after Walters' home run and picked up her second win of the day with 1.1 innings of shutout relief.
  • Erin Sinatra pitched the first 6.2 innings in game two and allowed five runs, one earned, on nine hits and five walks. She struck out seven.
Notes
  • Hood slipped to 12-13-1 overall and 3-5 in the MAC Commonwealth.
  • LVC improved to 15-6 on the season and 6-2 in conference play.
