Women's volleyball tripped up in tri-match

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Hood College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches in a tri-match hosted by Elizabethtown. The Blazers fell 3-0 to the Blue Jays before coming up short to Marywood 3-1.

  • Elizabethtown defeated Hood 25-10, 25-11 and 25-16. 
  • The Blazers fell to the Pacers 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22. 
Inside the Box Scores
  • Caitlin Ambruster (Fleetwood, PA/Brandywine Heights) had 20 kills over the two matches. 
  • Jackie Malitzki (Allentown, PA/Parkland) totaled 24 assists. 
  • Ashley Donald (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) finished the day with 23 digs. 
  • Shane Simms (Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point) had her second five-block match of the year against Marywood. 
Elizabethtown 3, Hood 0
  • Hood trailed early in the first set before back-to-back kills by Ambruster started a 4-1 spurt that pulled the Blazers within 8-6. 
  • A pair of miscues by Hood started a 17-4 run by Elizabethtown to end the set. 
  • The service of Malitzki to open set two kept the Blue Jays off-balance as Etown had errors on its first three attacks, opening the door for Hood to claim a 5-1 lead. 
  • Hood still led the second set 8-7 when the Blue Jays rattled off seven straight points to take the lead for good. 
  • The Blazers pulled within six twice late in the third set, 20-14 and 22-16, before Etown put the match away.
Marywood 3, Hood 1
  • The Pacers came out fast, scoring the opening five points of the match. 
  • Hood responded with an 11-4 run, including aces by Malitzki, Staci Kutzler (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) and Ambruster, to go ahead 11-9
  • The two teams traded leads three times over the next few points before a four-point surge for Marywood made it 17-14 and the Pacers never trailed again in the set. 
  • Set two opened with a back and forth that featured 12 ties and six lead changes and the teams tied at 17-17. 
  • The Blazers found their stride with an 8-2 set-closing run, including two kills by Carrington Ray (Washington, DC/St. Andrew's Episcopal) and two aces by Donald to even the match at 1-1. 
  • Four early errors by Marywood gave Hood a 5-1 lead in set three. 
  • Kills by Ambruster and MacKenzi Wright (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown) later in the set gave Hood its biggest lead at 17-11. 
  • The Pacers kept pace with a seven-point run to take an 18-17 lead before There were eight ties and lead changes over the next several points, the last of which was a Simms kill to tie the set at 23-23, but Marywood scored the next two points to claim the set victory. 
  • There were nine ties and lead changes early in set four before a 9-1 Hood run gave the Blazers an 18-13 lead, the biggest for either team to that point. 
  • The Blazers led 20-16 after a kill by Ainslee Barger (Poolesville, MD/Poolesville) before an 8-0 Pacer run, featuring three Libby Smith kills, gave Marywood a 24-20 advantage.   
For the Opponents
  • The Blue Jays' Bryanna Miller had a dozen kills in the Elizabethtown win, while Kambrie Hepler added 19 digs. 
  • Marywood's Mikayla Meek finished the match against Hood with 12 kills and 16 assists. 
Notes
  • Hood dropped to 4-5 on the year. 
  • Etown improved to 8-1 and Marywood to 5-4.
