How it Happened
Hood took control of the first set early, as kills from Ofoegbu and Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) helped give the Blazers a 6-1 lead. Although McDaniel had a few three-point runs in the middle of the set, Hood kept pace the whole way, and after a kill from Olivia Todd (Charlotte, N.C./Cox Mill) gave the Blazers a 20-12 lead, McDaniel only scored three more points before Ofoegbu gave the Blazers the set.
Although Hood started the second set in a 4-1 deficit, Powell and Ofoegbu helped take a 14-12 lead midway through the set. Neither team could get a hold on the set until McDaniel tied the game at 21, as the Green Terror only allowed one more point before finishing the set on a four-point run.
The Blazers started the third set off with a bang, quickly taking an 8-3 lead with aces from Burge and Ofoegbu. Hood then went on a 7-2 run after McDaniel managed to get within one, but the Green Terror would not go down without a fight, tying the set at 22 before the Blazers rattled off the final three points.
Despite Hood's strong 6-2 start to the fourth set, McDaniel would go on a 12-3 run to take a commanding lead. Although the Blazers started a late comeback with a four-point run to bring the deficit to 22-18, Kenzie Mitchell would get the final kill for the Green Terror to push the match to a decisive fifth set.
It looked like the fifth set would be over quickly when a trio of kills from Burge helped give the Blazers a 9-3 lead, but McDaniel stormed back to tie the score at 12. Ofoegbu did not let Hood's efforts go in vain however, as she ended the match with two of the Blazers' final three points.
