FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College women's basketball team comes just short of a victory over Mary Baldwin, as the Blazers fell 55-51 against the Fighting Squirrels.

Na'Vaye Quarles (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) finished with 16 points, 6 steals and 5 rebounds.
Chanelle Lee (Brunswick, Md./Saint John's Catholic Prep) also scored 12 points and had 6 rebounds on the night.
Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) accumulated 9 rebounds and 6 points in the game.
How it Happened
In the first quarter, both teams traded baskets back and forth. Towards the end of the quarter Mary Baldwin showed a leading edge ending the quarter 17-13.
Going into the second, the Blazers would show a determined effort to even out the score. In the final seconds of the first half Quarles knocked down a three-pointer beating the buzzer making it 28-26 at half. This would bring the Blazers within two points of the Fighting Squirrels.
Early in the third quarter Hood would show resilience by tying up the game at 28 after a made layup by Lee. Then Hood gained the lead over Mary Baldwin after another made three pointer by Quarles making the score 33-32. Hood would continue their scoring run with field goals from
Tiffany Manning (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech), Lee, Quarles and Betley. The quarter ended 45-41 in favor of the Blazers.
The Blazers started out the final quarter scoring first after a layup by
Nyla Laniyonu (Lawrenceville, Ga./Arundel (Md.)). As the quarter continued the teams matched baskets. In the final minutes Mary Baldwin hit two crucial free throws that gave the Fighting Squirrels a four point cushion over the Blazers.
Analysis
Mary Baldwin had a slight advantage in shooting percentage with 36.5 percent compared to Hood's 28.6 percent.
The Blazers out-rebounded the Fighting Squirrels 35-30.
Hood went 3-20 from the three-point range, while Mary Baldwin finished 5-12 from distance.
For the Opponent
A'Cetta Farrait led the Fighting Squirrels in scoring and in rebounds with 23 points and 7 boards.
Gianna Gilmore had 3 assists.
Notes
When asked about the outcome of the game Coach DeRonte Polite responded saying, "We had some good moments, but moments don't win basketball games. We have to put together a complete 40 minute game...that's the process."
Hood falls to 0-2 on the season, while Mary Baldwin advances to 1-1 on the season.
