Softball drops two in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Hood College softball team came up short against Salve Regina and Ramapo on the second day of the Blazers' spring break trip, falling to the Seahawks 13-6 and 4-0 to the Roadrunners.

At the Plate
  • Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) homered and drove in three against Salve Regina.
  • Rachel Benden (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the opener and singled against Ramapo.
  • Colleen Blasko (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) singled and walked in each game.
Inside the Circle
  • Gottleib took a complete game loss against the Roadrunners. She allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings. The sophomore struck out eight.
  • Against Salve Regina, Jordan Long (Middletown, Md./Middletown) took the loss, allowing nine runs in four innings. Lindsay Wilson (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School) surrendered four unearned runs in three innings of relief.
Salve Regina 13, Hood 6
  • Hood jumped ahead 2-0 in the first as the first five Blazers reached base in the bottom of the first inning. Chloe Saunders (Middletown, Md./Middletown), Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy), Gottleib and Alyssa Walters (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) all walked in the inning. Benden had the only hit of the inning, an RBI single that knocked in Saunders. Hood's other run came when Pfleiger scored on a bases-loaded walk to Walters.
  • After the Seahawks tied the game in the second inning, thanks in part to an RBI double by Sam Franceschi, the Blazers reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the frame. Blasko and Saunders walked and singled to start the inning. Gottleib brought Blasko home with a sacrifice fly and Benden followed with her second run-scoring hit in as many innings.
  • A two-run double by Hailey Basso tied the game in the fourth for Salve Regina, but Hood answered again in its next at bat. Gottleib homered, a two-run shot to center that scored Pfleiger to make it 6-4.
  • The Seahawks took control in the fifth with a seven-run inning. Emily Lane hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 6-6. Three batters later, Basso added another two-run double for the lead. Three more runs scored before Hood escaped the inning, giving Salve Reginia an 11-6 advantage.
  • An error in the top of the seventh allowed two more Seahawks to score, putting the game out of reach.
Ramapo 4, Hood 0
  • The Roadrunners' Marissa DiPaolo was on top of her game for most of the afternoon, holding Hood to just five hits in 6.1 innings.
  • Hood threatened in the seventh. Blasko drew a one-out walk and Saunders followed with a base hit to chase DiPaolo from the game. Brooke Knight came on in relief and forced a pair of flyouts to end the game.
  • Ramapo did all of its scoring in the first inning, as the first five hitters all reached base. After Alexis Corra drove in Avery Kontura with a single for the first run of the game, Mahogany Wheeler hit a two-run single through the left side to make it 3-0. Wheeler scored the final run later in the inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Anna Messina.
  • Before the seventh Hood's best chance to cut into the lead came in the fifth when a walk by Blasko and a Pfleiger double put runners on second and third with one out. DiPaolo retired the next two batters to end the threat.
For the Opponents
  • Salve Regina's Basso went 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBIs. Kylie Lanteri had a four-hit day.
  • The Seahawks' Skylar Wicklund picked up the win with four innings of relief.
  • Corra and Wheeler led Ramapo with two hits each.
Notes
  • Hood fell to 4-6 on the season.
