ARLINGTON, Va. - The Hood College softball team outslugged Marymount (Va.) 11-8 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader before falling 8-0 to the Saints in game two.
Inside the Box Score
- Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) had two hits in each game, including her seventh home run of the season in game one. The homer gave her seven this season, tied for fourth in a single season in program history.
- Chloe Saunders (Middletown, Md./Middletown) picked up a hit in each game, walked in the first game and drove in two runs.
- Rachel Benden (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) and Alyssa Walters (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) each had two hits and a double in game one.
Inside the Circle
- Jordan Long (Middletown, Md./Middletown) started and go the win in the opener. She pitched the first four innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Lindsay Wilson (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School) picked up the save allowing one run over the final three innings.
- Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) took a complete-game loss in game two, surrendering three earned runs over 5.1 innings. The sophomore struck out four, walked two and was charged with eight hits.
Hood 11, Marymount 8
- Hood jumped in front early, thanks to a four-run first inning. Pfleiger homered to left with one out to start the scoring and the Blazers scored the next three runs with two outs. Benden and Walters had back-to-back doubles, followed by Long's RBI single that made it 3-0. After Wilson and Mallorie Hetzel (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) walked, Colleen Blasko (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, knocking in Long for a four-run lead.
- The Saints got one run back in the bottom of the first before tying the game in the second. A two-run home run off the bat of Nicole Gilroy cut Hood's lead to 4-3 and Jaclyn Burch doubled in Hailey Leamer later in the inning to make it 4-4.
- The Blazers responded with a three-run third. Singles by Hetzel and Saunders drove in runs and a bases-loaded walk by Pfleiger gave Hood a 7-4 advantage.
- Marymount loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third inning. Leamer walked with the bases loaded and Kaylee Atkins scored on a fielder's choice to pull the Saints within 7-6.
- Another four-run inning followed for Hood in the fourth, with all the scoring coming with two outs. Long reached on a one-out single and after another out, Hetzel, Blasko and Saunders all walked in succession to score a run. All three runners scored when Pfleiger hit a fly ball that was dropped in center field for an 11-6 lead.
- Shanyn Burch hit a two-run homer to cut Hood's lead to three in the sixth.
Marymount 8, Hood 0 (6 innings)
- After an error allowed two Saints to score in the first, an RBI triple by Caitlyn Oakland gave Marymount a 3-0 lead.
- Neither team scored again until a two-run double by Kammie Brown in the fifth extended the Saints' lead to 5-0. Brown later scored on a single by Kaylynn Johnson for a six-run lead.
- Two more runs came home in the sixth for the Saints to end the game early.
For the Opponent
- Johnson had four hits in the opener and added another in game two.
- Shanyn Burch ended the day with three hits, including a double and a home run. She pitched a four-hit shutout and struck out four batters in game two.
- Bailey Demusz took the loss in game one. She was charged with seven runs in 2.1 innings.
Notes
- Both teams ended the afternoon with 7-9 records.
