OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Hood College softball team dropped both ends of its Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opening doubleheader, falling at Stevenson 8-0 and 11-6.
At the Plate
- Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) finished the day 3-for-5 with two doubles, a walk and an RBI.
- Kaelyn Blocher (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) and Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) also had multi-hit days. Pfleiger and Sammy McIntosh (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) both doubled.
Inside the Circle
- Jordan Long (Middletown, Md./Middletown) took the loss in the opener. She started and lasted just 0.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk. Rachel Benden (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) pitched the remaining 3.1 innings, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk. She struck out two.
- Gottleib went the distance in game two, taking the loss. She allowed nine earned runs on 18 hits in six innings. The sophomore struck out six and walked one.
Stevenson 8, Hood 0 (5 innings)
- The Mustangs took control of the game with a four-run first inning. Marissa Heuer and Jillian Haynes had back-to-back RBI triples for a 3-0 lead before Haines scored on a base it by Rebecca Henry.
- Megan Hamp followed Jordan Fangman's RBI double in the second with a two-run home run to stretch the Stevenson lead to 7-0.
- Fangman's second run-scoring double in the fourth accounted for the game's final run.
- Hood doubled twice in the top of the fourth but was unable to score.
Stevenson 11, Hood 6
- The Blazers scored six times in the second and third innings, but Stevenson scored in each of its final five frames to take the sweep.
- In the top of the second, Benden reached on an error and Alyssa Walters (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) singled to start the inning. McIntosh drove in Benden with a single and an RBI fielder's choice by Mallorie Hetzel (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) gave Hood a 2-0 lead.
- The Mustangs had already tied the game in the bottom of the inning before Kat Perea's RBI triple knocked in Henry for a 3-2 SU lead.
- Hood answered in the top of the third with four runs. After Chloe Saunders (Middletown, Md./Middletown) led off with a base hit, Pfleiger reached on an error. An RBI double off the bat of Gottleib and a Benden single put the Blazers ahead 4-3. Walters drove in a run with a ground ball and Blocher singled in a run to make it 6-3 before the inning ended.
- Heuer had an RBI double to cut Hood's lead to two and put runners on second and third. Henry followed with a game-tying single to center to make it 6-6.
- Heuer continued her big day with a go-head single as part of a two-run fourth that put the Mustangs ahead 8-6.
- Maddie Bosley tripled and scored in the fifth and Elizabeth Russo added a two-run single in the sixth for a five-run lead.
For the Opponent
- Heuer had a strong two-way day. At the plate, finished with four hits and four RBIs, including a double and a triple. Heuer was the starter in game one and tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out three for the win. She also picked up a save in the nightcap.
- Henry went 4-for-4 in the first game and added another hit in game two.
- Fangman had two doubles among her four hits.
- Ky Vaughn won game two in relief. She pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three.
Notes
- Hood fell to 7-10 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
- Stevenson is 10-4 overall.
