First-year pitchers lift baseball to victory in game two


ANNVILLE, Pa. - Hood College's pitching staff, led by a trio of first-year students, held a potent Lebanon Valley offense down in game two 4-3 after falling 18-0 in game one.
 
On the Mound
  • Tyler Cooney (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) started game two for the Blazers, allowing a run on one hit in 4.1 innings. The first-year student recorded two strikeouts and three walks.
  • Finn Scott-Daniels (Annandale, Va./Annandale) came in to finish the fifth inning, giving up one hit and striking out one to receive the win.  
  • Aaron Heller (Philadelphia, Pa./Jack Barrack Hebrew Acad.) got the save, recording the final out in the seventh inning after Kevin Nelson, Jr. (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) ran into trouble in the seventh, allowing two runs in 1.2 innings.. 
  • Colby Childs (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) started game one and was the first of six pitchers for the Blazers. He gave up five runs on two hits in one inning. The junior walked two and had a hit-by-pitch. 
  • Scott Ash's (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) one-hit third inning stood out among the final five pitchers. Gavin Pollard (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley), Mason Sawyers (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County), Joe Monteleone (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights), Quade Gannon (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) and Jim Ledford (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) combined to give up 13 runs over five innings.
At the Plate 
  • Keegan Brennan (Lake Wynonah, Pa./Nativity BVM) led the Blazers at the plate in game two, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and an RBI. The sophomore also scored once and stole a base.  
  • Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) hit a two-RBI single late in game two. 
  • Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) had an RBI single, a stolen base and a run scored in game two. 
G2: Hood 4, Lebanon Valley 3
  • Lebanon Valley got on the board first in the second inning. Andrew Miles reached on a throwing error by Cooney and later scored on a Dave Mangold double down the right field line to take a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Blazers knotted up the game in the third inning, when Brennan tripled into the right field gap to score Austin Rhue (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen). 
  • Cooney retired six out of seven batters in the next two innings to hold the Dutchmen off the scoreboard. 
  • Hood saw Rhue reach first via a walk and Brennan reach on a throwing error by Andrew Spaan to start the fifth inning. Reyna kept the rally going with a  bunt single to bring home Rhue. Stout followed and singled up the middle to bring home Brennan and Reyna to give the Blazers a 4-1 lead. 
  • Hood retired the first two LVC batters to start the seventh inning before Nico Santoro reached on an error to keep the inning alive. Logan Brewer homered in the next at-bat to pull the Dutchmen within 4-3. Heller entered the game and was greeted by Jace Fetterman's walk and a Shane Stossel single to represent the tying and winning runs. Heller secured the win when Conor Smith fly out to left field to secure a 4-3 win. 
G1: Lebanon Valley 18, Hood 0
  • Santoro walked and Fetterman was hit by a pitch to lead off the first inning. Stossel doubled off the wall in center field to bring in Santoro and Fetterman. Following a Andrew Miles walk, Dave Mangold homered to to center field to push LVC out in front 5-0. 
  • Duncan Weir tripled in the second and scored on a failed pick off by Pollard. Later in the inning, Smith and Miles hit back-to-back singles to drive in Fetterman and Brewer to stretch the lead to eight. 
  • The Dutchmen had four players record RBI hits in the fourth inning to push LVC to a 12-0 lead. 
  • Six more runs scored in the next three innings, including a home run by Jared Copeland, to put the game out of reach.
For the Opponent 
  • Mangold had four hits on the day with a home run, a double, four RBIs and scored once. 
  • Stossel had a strong two-way performance in game one, recording three RBIs with a double and a run scored. He also threw six innings, totalling nine strikeouts and one hit for the win.
  • Weir hit a triple and a double in game one, totalling one RBI and two runs scored. 
  • Brewer hit a two-run home run in game two with two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Miles had two RBIs in game one, he scored twice and stole a base. 
  • Copeland homered in game one. 
Notes
  • Hood moved to 11-8 overall and 4-2 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth.  
  • Lebanon Valley finished the day at 9-10-1 (5-1)
