FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College scored three runs in the ninth inning before Gettysburg College escaped with a 9-7 win in non-conference baseball.
At the Plate
- Jack Patterson (Boyds, Md./Northwest) led the Blazers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a walk.
- Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) had a two-hit game, scored once and walked.
- Keegan Brennan (Lake Wynonah, Pa./Nativity BVM) scored three times, had a stolen base and walked once.
- James Gruenfelder (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) recorded his first career home run.
- Alex Jenkins (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) doubled and scored once on the afternoon.
On the Mound
- Aaron Heller (Philadelphia, Pa./Jack Barrack Hebrew Acad.) started the game for the Blazers and threw three complete innings, allowing two runs on four hits. The first-year student also recorded four strikeouts
- Quade Gannon (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) and Kevin Nelson, Jr. (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) combined to throw the fourth inning, giving up one run on two hits.
- Joe Monteleone (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) gave up one run on one hit, with two walks in 1.2 innings.
- Scott Ash (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) struggled in an inning on the mound, letting in three runs on two hits. The senior walked two and had a strikeout.
- Mason Sawyers (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) allowed three hits and one run in two innings of work, he also had three strikeouts. Mason Salisbury (Colora, Md./Perryville) threw a ground out for the final out of the ninth inning.
How it Happened
- The Blazers were down 9-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning before creating some drama. Andrew Perkins (Fresno, Calif./Clovis North) drew a one-out walk to start the rally and Brennan singled to third base. Perkins, who moved to third on a throwing error on Brennan's single, scored when the fly ball off the bat of Jenkins was dropped in right field. Patterson singled through the right side to score Brennan to make it 9-6. Jenkins crossed home when Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) grounded out to third base. The rally fell short as Patterson was thrown out at third base to end the game.
- Hood got on the board in the first inning, when Brennan led off the game by getting hit by a pitch, stole second and later scored on a Patterson single up the middle.
- Gruenfelder hit a two-run homer down the line in left, which drove in Reyna for a 3-0 lead after two innings.
- Gettysburg answered in the third inning starting with back-to-back doubles by JR McCloskey and David Preziuso. Preziuso later scored on a Jack Pistner single through the right side to pull the Bullets within 3-2.
- Aaron Kirby led off the fourth inning with a base hit up the middle for Gettysburg and later scored on an error by Richard Kershow (Eatons Neck, N.Y./Northport) at third base to tie up the game. Toothman, who walked earlier in the inning, and Mabret Levant, who reached on Kershow's error, executed a double steal. Toothman scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Emmanuel Ajewole to right field.
- The Bullets added to their lead in the fifth inning that started with a Matt Nichols infield single. Nichols reached third base on a throwing error by Austin Rhue (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) and later scored on a Kirby sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-3.
- In the bottom of the inning, Brennan reached first on a throwing error by Pistner and moved to third on a Jenkins double down the right field line. Brennan came home on a Patterson sacrifice fly to right field to pull within one, 5-4.
- Pistner walked and stole second to start the seventh for the Bullets. Kirby doubled into the gap to knock in Pistner for the first run of the inning. Toothman walked and stole second later in the inning before Levant singled up the middle to score Kirby and Toothman for an 8-4 lead.
- Gettysburg added another run in the top of the ninth, as Peipher singled through the middle to start the inning. Zachary Klein came into pinch run and scored on a Levant double into the gap for a 9-4 lead.
For the Opponent
- Levant led the Bullets with three RBIs, a double and a stolen base.
- Kirby had a double and two RBIs.
- Preziuso recorded a double and drove in one.
- Pistner had an RBI, scored once and stole a base on a two-hit afternoon.
- Toothman scored twice and walked twice in the game.
Notes
- The Blazers fell to 11-9 on the season.
- Gettysburg improved to 13-8.
