FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College baseball took the lead early and never looked back in a 6-3 win over visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland in non-conference action.
At the Plate
- Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) led Hood going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases.
- Austin Rhue (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) had a double, an RBI and scored twice. The first-year student also had two stolen bases.
- Richard Kershow (Eatons Neck, N.Y./Northport) ended the game with a triple, an RBI, scored once and stole base.
- Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) finished with an RBI double and a run scored.
On the Mound
- Gavin Pollard (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) started the game for the Blazers and threw three complete innings, allowing one run on two hits. The junior walked one and had one strikeout.
- Cole Whitton (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) allowed only one hit in two innings in relief and a strikeout.
- Mason Salisbury (Colora, Md./Perryville) pitched 1.1 innings giving up one run on two hits and two walks.
- Finn Scott-Daniels (Annandale, Va./Annandale) allowed two hits in 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.
- Scott Ash (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) got the save in the final inning, giving up one run on two hits. The senior recorded a strikeout and a walk.
How it Happened
- The Seahawks took the lead in the first inning of the game, as Dan Weedon doubled into the right field gap, driving in George Berbakos.
- Hood struck back in the bottom half of the inning. Austin Rhue (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) walked to lead off and stole second. Consecutive groundouts by Schwarzman and Kershow brought him in to tie the game. .
- The Blazers got the lead off runner on base again in the second, as Jack Patterson (Boyds, Md./Northwest) reached on an error by Dan Weedon and later scored on a Reyna double into the right field gap to give Hood their first lead 2-1. Reyna came home on a Rhue single up the middle to push the Hood lead to 3-1.
- For the third consecutive inning, the Blazers got the lead off runner on base by way of a Kershow triple to left field. Patterson executed a squeeze bunt to bring in Kershow for a 4-1 for Hood.
- The Seahawks pulled closer in the seventh inning as Trevor Smith led of the inning with a double into right field. Smith scored on a Myles Pittman single up the middle later in the inning to cut the Blazer lead to 4-2.
- Hood responded in the bottom half of the inning. Rhue reached on a Trevor Smith error. Schwarzman followed with a single and Rhue stole third before a passed ball pushed the lead to 5-2.
- In the eighth inning, Patterson walked for the Blazers with one out. He later scored with two outs as Pittman dropped the ball in left field for St. Mary's (Md.) to give Hood a 6-2 lead heading to the ninth.
- St. Mary's (Md.) tacked on one more run in the ninth inning as Adrian Auber scored on a fielder's choice by the Blazers, but Hood prevailed winning 6-3.
For the Opponent
- Ian Walters led the Seahawks going 3-for-4 with two doubles.
- Pittman went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Smith ended the game with two hits, a double and a run scored.
- Weeden had two RBIs and a double on the afternoon.
