FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College baseball team split its Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader at home against Stevenson University, winning the opener 5-1 and dropping the second game 8-5.
At the Plate
- Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) led the Blazers at the plate going 4-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and scored three times.
- Richard Kershow (Eatons Neck, N.Y./Northport) ended the day going 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and scoring once.
- Jacob Saylor (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) collected four RBIs on the afternoon and scored once.
- Keegan Brennan (Lake Wynonah, Pa./Nativity BVM) had two hits with a triple, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
- Jack Patterson (Boyds, Md./Northwest), Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) all recorded an RBI.
On the Mound
- Aaron Heller (Philadelphia, Pa./Jack Barrack Hebrew Acad.) started game one for the Blazers, scattering seven hits and allowed one run to score. The first-year student also had four strikeouts in the five complete innings.
- Scott Ash (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) received his second save of the season, giving up only two hits and struck out two in the final two innings.
- Mason Sawyers (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) got the start in game two, allowing three runs without giving up a hit. The first-year student walked four and struck out one as he went into the third inning. He took the loss.
- Joe Monteleone (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) had to come with the bases loaded in the third inning and let in two runs on no hits. He walked one and had a hit-by-pitch to finish the inning.
- Kevin Nelson, Jr. (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) allowed two runs on two hits in the fourth inning. Cole Whitton (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) walked two in a scoreless fifth inning.
- Remi Schaber (Memphis, Tenn./Lausanne Collegiate School) saw her first action on the mound this season to give up one run on two hits in the sixth. Gavin McGuigan (Croydon, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) threw a scoreless seventh inning in his first time on the mound in his career.
Hood 5, Stevenson 1
- In the second, Reyna and Rhue drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. After both runners advancing on a wild pitch, Saylor knocked in Reyna on a sacrifice fly out to right field. Patterson singled through the right side to score Rhue during the next at-bat. Brennan hit a single up into left field with two outs to let Patterson cross home, as Hood jumped out in front 3-0.
- Rhue doubled into the left field gap, stole second and scored on a Saylor single through the left side. Kershow doubled two batters later to knock in Saylor to extend the Blazers' lead to 5-0.
- Jonathan Brandt, Brandon Perillo and Trent Smoot all singled through the left side to start the fourth inning for the Mustangs. Dylan Scott was hit by a pitch to let Brandt cross home for Stevenson's first and only run of the game.
Stevenson 8, Hood 5
- Hood grabbed an early lead in the first inning. Schwarzman reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a Stout single up the middle.
- Stevenson's Brandt was hit by a pitch, Perillo and Smoot both walked to load the bases in the second inning with one out. Brandt scored on a wild pitch but Sawyers limited the damage to one run by retiring the next two batters, to keep the score tied a 1-1.
- Sawyers struggled in the third inning walking the first two Mustang batters. Monteleone walked the first person he faced in Nick Tamberino to load up the bases. Tommy Holcomb was hit by a pitch to score Billy McAdam to give Stevenson its first lead of the game 2-1. Brandt and Perillo both reached on fielder's choices in the next two at-bats to knock in Tamberino and Amani Jones. Holcomb scored the fourth and final run of the inning on a Smoot sacrifice fly to right field to give the Mustangs a 5-1 lead.
- Alex Russo walked and McAdam singled to right field to start the fourth inning for Stevenson. Russo was knocked in by a Jones sacrifice fly out to right field and McAdam crossed home on a Blazer passed ball for a 7-1 advantage.
- The Blazers got a run back in the bottom half of the fourth inning as Reyna scored on a Saylor sacrifice fly out to left field.
- Kershow singled to start the fifth inning and crossed home on by a Brennan triple off the center field wall. Brennan accounted for the Blazers' second run of the inning when Schwarzman grounded out to second base, cutting the Mustang lead to 7-4.
- Stevenson added a run in the sixth inning when Holcomb singled home Jones that reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
- Reyna doubled down the left field line to start the bottom of the sixth inning and scored Saylor's third sacrifice fly of the day.
- The Blazers threatened, loading the bases to bring the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning but Stevenson hung on to win 8-5.
For the Opponent
- Holcomb ended the afternoon with three hits, recording a double, two RBIs, a stolen base and scored once.
- Perillo had a hit in each game with an RBI, a stolen base and walked twice.
- Jones hit a double, had an RBI and scored twice on the day.
- McAdam scattered three hits throughout the doubleheader with a stolen base and scored twice.
- Brady Power started game one and took the loss, going 1.2 innings giving up three runs on two hits and walked three.
- Seth Hartman let in two runs on six hits in 3.1 innings in relief.
- Matt Kossey struck out one in a scoreless seventh inning.
- Dylan Young started game two for Stevenson and received the win. He pitched four full innings and gave up two runs on three hits and had four strikeouts.
- Jason Labrador let in two runs on two hits in the fifth inning.
- Patrick O'Farrell pitched into the seventh inning to give up one run on two hits as Matt Reich came into clean up the mess to receive the save for the Mustangs.
