Softball drops both games of twinbill at Alvernia


READING, Pa. - The Hood College softball team dropped both games of its Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader at Alvernia 1-0 and 8-5.  

At the Plate
  • Chloe Saunders (Middletown, Md./Middletown) led the Blazers at the plate going 4-for-6, with a stolen base and scored once.
  • Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) went 4-for-7 at the dish, including an RBI in game two. 
  • Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) had three hits on the day with two doubles and two RBIs.
  • Sammy McIntosh (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) recorded two hits in game two with an RBI. 
On the Mound
  • Gottleib got the start in game one, allowing only one run on three hits in 6.2 innings. The sophomore struck out six and walked three in the loss. 
  • Rachel Benden (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) started game two and took the loss, giving up two earned runs out of six  on 11 hits.
  • Lindsay Wilson (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School) tossed the final inning for the Blazers, letting in two unearned runs. 
Alvernia 1, Hood 0 
  • The Golden Wolves' Paige Paciolla singled through the left side to start the seventh inning. Payton LaScala came in to pinch run and stole second and scored on the winning run on a Meryn Bellacima sacrifice fly to center field to win the game 1-0. 
  • Gottleib allowed only two hits in the first six innings, retiring nine out of 10 batters faced from the fourth to the sixth inning. 
Alvernia 8, Hood 5 
  • Hood grabbed its first lead of the day in the third inning. Colleen Blasko (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) singled up the middle to start the inning. Blasko was knocked in on a Pfleiger double into left center field for a 1-0 lead. 
  • Maggie Loomis tripled down the right field line to start the bottom of the third. Jaclyn Barbera singled through the left side to score Loomis. Allison Kirschner singled up the middle before an error by Alyssa Walters (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) let Barbera cross home. Paciolla singled up the middle with two outs and drove in both Kirschner and Bellacima. The inning concluded after Devan Hudson doubled to right center to knock in Paciolla to cap off a five-run inning for Alvernia for a 5-1 lead. 
  • The Golden Wolves added another run in the fifth inning to lead 6-1. Bellacima singled to third base to start the inning. Pinch runner Maddie Matthews later scored on a Brooke Weister triple into the right field gap. 
  • Alexia Fitzgerald began the sixth inning reaching first on anerror by Benden in left field. She later scored on a Barbera single up the middle. Payton Splain came into pinch run and was knocked in on a Bellacima double to left field for a 8-1 lead for Alvernia. 
  • Hood tried to mount a comeback scoring four runs in the seventh inning. Blasko singled through the right side and Saunders walked to start the inning. Pfleiger scored Blasko with a double to left field and Saunders came home on a Gottleib base hitup the middle. Pfleiger scored on a wild pitch and Gottleib crossed home on a McIntosh single.
For the Opponent
  • Bellacima ended the afternoon 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. 
  • Barbera had three hits in game two with two RBIs. 
  • First name Weister tripled in game two and knocked in one. 
  • Paciolla ended the day with two RBIs. 
  • Loomis pitched a shutout in game one for the Golden Wolves, scattering only five hits and struck out six. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate in game two with a triple. 
  • Emma Kropkowski got the start in game two, allowing eight hits and only one run in 2.1 innings. Kelsey Racine pitched 3.2 scoreless innings in relief to get the win with only two hits and two strikeouts.Ashlyn Hillanbrand threw the seventh inning letting in four runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

The Blazers are back in action on Sunday, Apr. 23 when they travel to Wilson College for a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
