Trio tie record in sweep at Wilson


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Hood College's Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy), Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) and Rachel Benden (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) tied the softball team's single game hit record in a 14-2 win in the opener at Wilson. The Blazers went on to sweep the non-conference doubleheader with a 6-3 win in game two.   

At the Plate
  • Gottleib led the Blazers at the plate, going 7-for-9 with two doubles and two RBIs.
  • Pfleiger ended the day going 5-for-10 with two doubles and two RBIs in the doubleheader. 
  • Benden doubled twice among her four hits in game one.
  • Chloe Saunders (Middletown, Md./Middletown) had four hits with a double, three RBIs and a stolen base.
  • Sammy McIntosh (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) recorded three hits, three RBIs and a stolen base on the afternoon. 
  • Alyssa Walters (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) finished with two RBIs and a double in game one. 
  • Lindsay Wilson (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School) had a two RBI double in game one. 
Inside the Circle
  • Gottleib tossed a complete game in game one in the circle. The sophomore struck out nine and allowed two runs on five hits. 
  • Benden got the ball in game two and gave up three runs on seven hits and walked one in an complete game effort. 
Hood 14, Wilson 2 
  • The 12 combined hits by Pfleiger, Gottleib and Benden resulted in Hood tying the school's single game mark with 23 hits.
  • Wilson grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the second inning. Ashley Stevens singled to right center field to start the inning. Madison Briggs moved Stevens over to third with a single through the right side and Stevens scored on the Pheonix third consecutive hit of the inning by Kaesey Greene. 
  • Hood started the third inning with six consecutive hits to answer Wilson. Saunders doubled into left center field and traded places with Pfleiger that hit a double down the left field line to tie up the game at 1-1. Gottleib doubled over the center fielders head to knock in Pfleiger to give the Blazers the lead. Following a Benden single up the middle, McIntosh singled up the middle to let Gottleib cross home. Benden and McIntosh converted a double deal to set up a Lillian Larsen (Arbutus, Md./Western Tech) infield single to score Benden. The five run inning was capped off as McIntosh scored on a wild pitch to give the Blazers a 5-1 lead. 
  • Marina Monsalve singled up the middle for Wilson to begin the fourth inning. She scored later in the inning on a wild pitch and a throwing error by Saunders as the Pheonix still trailed 5-2. 
  • Hood added four more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Kaelyn Blocher (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) singled up the middle and scored on a Walters double to right field. Walters moved to third on the throw home on her double and was able to score on an error by Stevens at home. Saunders walked, stole second and moved to third on an error by Haiden Brookens. She was knocked in on a Pfleiger single up the middle. Izzy Tanacea (Charlton, Mass./Bay Path RVT) pinch ran for Pfleiger and scored from first on a Benden double down the left field line to give the Hood a 9-2 lead. 
  • The Blazers added five runs in the seventh inning. Pfleiger, Gottleib and Benden all singled to load up the bases. Pfeiger was knocked in on a McIntosh single up the middle, Gottleib and Benden were knocked in on a Wilson double into left center and Wilson ended the inning to score on a Saunders hit to third base. 
Hood 6, Wilson 3 
  • Wilson took the lead first in the bottom of the first inning. Brookens doubled to right center field and later scored on a wild pitch. Riley Henry reached first on a fielders choice earlier in the inning and scored on an error by Blocher to give the Pheonix a 2-0 lead. 
  • The Blazers answered in the top of the second inning. Benden and McIntosh hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning. Jordan Long (Middletown, Md./Middletown) walked a few batters later to load up the bases and Benden and McIntosh both scored on a Mallorie Hetzel (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) single into right field. Saunders singled to cash in Long and Hetzel to give Hood a 4-2 lead.
  • Alyssa Wenger tripled down the left field line and scored on a Klarissa Miley sacrifice bunt to pull Wilson within one. 
  • Hood got that run back in the the third inning as Gottleib doubled to the fence to start the inning. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and crossed home on a McIntosh groundout to second base to up the Blazer lead to 5-3. 
  • Saunders singled on a bunt and later scored on a Gottleib single through the left side to end the scoring as the Blazers won 6-3.
