FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College baseball team dropped a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth contest to visiting Widener 10-3.
At the Plate
- Austin Rhue (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) led the Blazers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
- Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) finished the game with an RBI, scoring once.
- Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) both scored once.
On the Mound
- Mason Sawyers (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) started the game and took the loss. The first-year student gave up six runs on five hits in two innings.
- Aaron Heller (Philadelphia, Pa./Jack Barrack Hebrew Acad.) allowed two runs on four hits in three innings of relief. He also walked three and struck out one.
- Scott Ash (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) threw a scoreless sixth inning and Colby Childs (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) gave up only a hit in the seventh.
- Mason Salisbury (Colora, Md./Perryville) allowed two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings. Jim Ledford (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) retired the final batter of the ninth inning.
How it Happened
- In the first inning, Kyle Brex reached on a throwing error by Rhue and Justin Costanzo singled through the left side. Andrew Yates followed with a home run to right field for a 3-0 Pride lead. Later in the inning, Bryce Fremgen hit a home run of his own to extend the Widener lead to 4-0.
- Brandon Robinson doubled down the left field line to start the second inning. Brex walked and Costanzo was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Yates doubled into the left field gap to score Robinson and Brex extending the Pride lead to 6-0.
- In the third inning with two outs, Robinson and Aaron Nuble both drew back-to-back walks. Anthony Boccio singled through the right side of the infield to cash in Robinson.
- Widener added another run in the fourth inning as Yates doubled and later scored on a Nick Barenz single up the middle.
- The Blazers found their way on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Schwarzman walked and advanced to second a wild pitch. Stout singled up the middle to knock in Schwarzman. Following a Reyna base hit, Rhue doubled down the right field line to score Stout and Reyna to cut the Pride lead to 8-3.
- Widener added two more runs in the ninth inning as Cameron Day (Hagerstown, Md./Clear Spring) dropped a fly ball in right field to allow Barenz and Nuble to score.
For the Opponent
- Yates had a monster day at the plate going 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, five RBIs and scored twice.
- Barenz also went 4-for-5 for the Pride with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
- Fremgen hit a solo home run in the game.
- Robinson doubled and scored twice.
- Boccio recorded an RBI.
- Sean Curran went seven innings for Widener to receive the win. He allowed three runs on seven hits and had four strikeouts.
- Tyler Conlin threw the last two innings and gave up just one hit.
