Alexander pitches shutout in split with Widener


CHESTER, Pa. - Hood College's Joe Alexander (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) threw his first career shutout in a 3-0 victory over Widener. The Pride won 4-3 on a walk-off hit-by-pitch in the second game of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader.  

On the Mound
  • Alexander started game one for the Blazers, scattering eight hits with four strikeouts in the complete game shutout. 
  • Gavin Pollard (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) got the start in game two, giving up just one hit in two innings. 
  • Joe Monteleone (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights), Scott Ash (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) and Finn Scott-Daniels (Annandale, Va./Annandale) all threw an inning, combining to allow three hits and no runs. 
  • Kevin Nelson, Jr. (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) let in two runs on a hit in the sixth inning.
  • Colby Childs (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) started the seventh inning and after two quick outs left with the bases loaded. Quade Gannon (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) hit the first and only batter he faced to end the game.       
At the Plate
  • Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) had two hits on the day with a double, one RBI and a run scored.
  • Austin Rhue (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) finished the afternoon game 3-for-6 with two doubles and a run scored. 
  • Richard Kershow (Eatons Neck, N.Y./Northport) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and scored once.
  • Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) both had an RBI. 
Hood 3, Widener 0 
  • In the first, Schwarzman singled with one out through the middle and Sommer walked to set up an RBI single by Stout. Sommer later scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.
  • Kershow doubled down the right field line to start the sixth inning and later scored on a Schwarzman safety squeeze. 
  • It as more than enough support for Alexander, who retired 12 out of 13 Widener hitters from the third to the sixth inning to keep the Pride off the scoreboard. 
Widener 4, Hood 3 
  • Widener grabbed its first lead of the day in the third inning. Anthony Boccio singled, Kyle Brex walked and Andrew Yates reached on a Reyna error to load the bases. Nick Barenz was hit by a pitch during the next at bat to bring Boccio home. 
  • The Blazers answered in the top half of the fourth inning with a run. Rhue was hit by a pitch to start the inning and later scored on a Kershow single through the right side to tie the game at 1-1. 
  • Hood took the lead with two outs in the fifth inning, when Stout doubled into the left field gap and came in on a Reyna single up the middle of a 2-1 lead. 
  • Xavier Ruley walked and Aaron Nuble was hit by a pitch to start the sixth inning for the Pride. Ruley scored on a Boccio single through the right side to tie up the game. Brex knocked in Nuble on a sacrifice fly out to left field to give Widener a 3-2 heading into the last inning. 
  • Brennan drew a walk to represent the tying run for the Blazers in the seventh. The sophmore used a Schwarzman sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and a fielding error by Stephen Posner to tie the game up at 3-3. 
  • Childs retired the first two batters of the seventh inning before Widener's Jon Aman was hit by a pitch. Posner singled to left field and Ruley walked to load up the bases. Following a pitching change for Hood, Nuble was hit by a Gannon pitch to win the game for the Pride 4-3.  
For the Opponent
  • Boccio had three hits in game two with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored. 
  • Barenz ended the day with two hits and an RBI.
  • Brex and Nuble both recorded an RBI on the afternoon. 
  • Hayden O'Neill started game one and took the complete-game loss. He allowed three runs on four hits with five strikeouts in seven innings. 
  • Caleb Horner got the start in game two for the Pride and gave up two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. 
  • Kyle Laing had three strikeouts in two innings of relief. He only allowed one run with no hits and walked two.

The Blazers are back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 11 when they continue Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play against Stevenson University at home at 3:30 p.m.
