Pitching leads softball to split with Pride

FREDERICK, Md. - Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) and Rachel Benden (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) combined to allow just two earned runs over the course of the doubleheader and Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) hit a walk-off single in the opener as Hood College won 2-1 in the opener before falling 3-0 in the nightcap to visiting Widener in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play.

Inside the Circle
  • Gottlieb threw a complete game, striking out 10 for the win. She allowed just an unearned run on five hits and two walks. Her 10 strikeouts were one off of her career high and two away from tying the school's single-game record.
  • Benden pitched her best game of the season but took the complete-game loss. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits and a walk, striking out two.
At the Plate
  • Pfleiger drove in both runs for Hood. She went 5-for-8 on the day, including three hits in the opener.
  • Chloe Saunders (Middletown, Md./Middletown) had a pair of two-hit games.
  • Jordan Long (Middletown, Md./Middletown) had three total hits, including a double.
Hood 2, Widener 1
  • Gottleib no-hit Widener through the first four innings as the sophomore and Widener's Mikayla Fedele were locked in a pitcher's duel.
  • The Blazers broke the scoreless deadlock in the fifth inning. Sammy McIntosh (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) led off the inning with a single but only advanced to second before there were two outs. Pfleiger came through with a run-scoring single to right center for a 1-0 lead.
  • Gottleib worked around a leadoff triple in the sixth before Widener finally scored in the seventh. Eliana Guerrieri reached on an error by Alyssa Walters (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) and scored on a two-out single by Kaylin Johnson to tie the game.
  • Hood rallied with two outs in the seventh for the victory. Colleen Blasko (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) kept the game alive with a base hit to center. Saunders followed with an infield hit to put runners on first and second for Pfleiger. The sophomore picked up her third hit of the contest, driving in Blasko for the win.
Widener 3, Hood 0
  • Benden and Widener's pitching staff dueled in the second game until the Pride scored in the sixth.
  • Guerrieri singled with runners on first and second to drive in Johnson for the game's first run and Jalia Lawrence moved to third on the play. Becca Tiley sent a fly ball to center that scored Lawrence for a 2-0 lead.
  • An error by the Blazers in the seventh allowed Widener to tack on an insurance run, with Fedele scoring later on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
For the Opponent
  • Katchur got the win in relief in game two, allowing four hits and striking out two. She combined with Jill Gray on the shutout, as Gray surrendered only three hits over the opening four frames.
  • Fedele got a no-decision in the opener. She pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts.
  • Samantha McCarthy took the loss, allowing one run on three hits in the final 1.2 innings.
