SCRANTON, Pa. – The men's soccer team held on to a one score lead off the foot of
Cam Simpler (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) but was stunned with a penalty kick with minutes to go and ended up with a draw against Marywood 1-1 on Wednesday night.
Inside the Box Score
Cam Simpler (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) scored the Blazer's first and only goal of the night.
Jonathan Fuentes (Hagerstown, Md./Oakdale) earned an assist.
Nick Humphries (Potomac, Md./Potomac) made four saves.
How it Happened
The Blazers were able to apply pressure to the Pacers' defense but their backs compacted tightly into the box to deny entry of any 50-50 balls to deflect off of Hood bodies.
Both squads had two shots to notch a goal in the half but after 45 minutes it remained 0-0.
Ten minutes passed in the second half before Fuentes broke away from his coverage and was served a ball into the right corner of the opposition. Before the ball passed the end line, he sent it into the box where Simpler received the pass and had time to juggle it before putting it past the Marywood goalkeeper to put the Blazers up 1-0.
Some fresh legs came in for the Pacers and created some energy that they would carry into the end of the match. Both squads would about double their offensive opportunities in the second half but the Blazers held on to their lead for now.
A late one-on-one opportunity for the Pacers was halted with a Hood defensemen knocking over Marywood's Alex Visha creating a penalty kick.
Kyle Falcon sent his penalty kick to Humphries' left and the ball hit off his forearm and deflected into the goal to tie up the game with less than two minutes of play left.
