Women's basketball holds Hollins off to win in overtime

FREDERICK, Md. – Hood College women's basketball held Hollins scoreless in overtime on their way to a 59-49 home victory in Sunday afternoon's non conference game.

Inside the Box Score

Kourtney Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch High School) scored 19 points and snagged eight rebounds.

Maya Gordon (Towson, Md./Loch Raven High School) scored nine points.

Tiffany Manning (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) finished with seven points, six rebounds, and four assists. She also led the Blazers with two steals.

How it Happened

Hollins jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead. Manning entered the contest and provided instant offense as she made back-to-back midrange jump shots. Hollins responded then Johnson went on a 5-0 scoring run by herself. Serenity Ritchie (Martinsburg, W.V./Martinsburg High School) finished through contact and was good from the free throw line just before time expired. Hood overcame the early deficit and fought back to tie the game 12-12 by the end of the first quarter.

Mari Faust (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) got Hood started in the second quarter with a tough finish coming at the end of a well-executed offensive set. Hood attacked the basket and earned points from the free throw line; Hollins did too. Both teams traded baskets and had the crowd locked in on every possession. A three-pointer by Gordon and a fadeaway by Johnson brought everyone to their feet. Hollins' Sarah Morales responded with a jump shot of her own. Na'Vaye Quarles' (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) layup as the clock hit zero gave Hood a narrow 25-24 lead heading into halftime.

The back-and-forth action continued after the break. Johnson went on another scoring run before Hood's turnovers gave Hollins' offense a spark. Chanelle Lee (Brunswick, Md./Saint John's Catholic Prep) sunk a three-pointer that gave Manning the assist after she collapsed the defense. Shylah Taylor (Cumberland, Md./Allegany High School) and Aliyah Taylor (Randallstown, Md./Pikesville High School) also contributed to extend the Blazers' lead and go up 38-34 going into the final frame.

Johnson and Quarles scored at the beginning of the fourth quarter to put Hood up by eight. Hollins' Cabria Mutz came back into the game and scored eight straight points, highlighted by multiple post fadeaways, to wipe away the Blazers' lead. Following the extra pass from Manning, Libby Kiley (Taneytown, Md./Springdale Prep) made a clutch three-pointer to break the tie and put Hood back up. Morales responded for Hollins and brought the score to 49-49 with one minute left in regulation. After multiple defensive stops, neither team was able to put the game away. Overtime approached as the score stayed even at 49-49.

Overtime began with both teams unable to get anything going offensively. Manning broke the defensive stalemate with a tough inside-hand finish late in the shot clock. Quarles blocked a jump shot and converted on a layup on the other end. A couple of layups from Johnson and a pair of free throws from Gordon put it out of reach and sealed the victory for the Blazers. Hollins was held scoreless for the entire overtime and Hood won their fourth straight home game 59-49.
