WESTMINSTER, Md. – Despite a close game heading into the fourth quarter, the Hood College women's lacrosse team could not overcome McDaniel College, as the Green Terror scored seven goals in the final 15 minutes to hand the Blazers a 19-12 loss.
Inside the Box Score
Mackenzie Demaio (Urbana, Md./Coronado (Calif.)) finished with three goals and one assists for four points.
Abby Burnette (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) scored two and dished out two for four points as well.
How it Happened
McDaniel opened up the scoring quickly, scoring less than three minutes into the game and then twice more in the next two minutes, taking advantage of some early Hood green cards to go up 3-0.
The Blazers did not let the game get out of hand though, scoring
Kayla Russell (Elkton, Md./Northeast) getting them on the board with just over ten minutes to play and Burnette getting Hood within one almost seven minutes later. Although the Green Terror scored to get their lead back to two, a tally by
Laney Goldrick (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) from a free position shot with 13 seconds left got the Blazers within one once again.
Hood managed to tie the game up just 22 seconds into the second quarter thanks to Demaio, but back-to-back goals from Emma Legacy regained McDaniel's two-goal lead. Burnette scored her second of the game to get the Blazers within one, but another quick pair of goals from the Green Terror put Hood in an 8-5 deficit before
Julia Gregory (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Twp.) finished a shot with 40 seconds left to make it an 8-6 disadvantage heading into halftime.
Similar to the first two quarters, McDaniel scored quickly to build on their lead with three goals in just under four minutes to put them up 11-6, but there was no quit in Hood's steps as they scored five of the next six goals, with Demaio surpassing 100 points in her career during the run, to get back into the game at a 12-11 disadvantage. The Green Terror got one more past
Remy Anderson (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) before the horn to lead the Blazers 13-11 heading into the final frame.
Unfortunately for the visiting team, McDaniel came out swinging once again, scoring four times in the first seven minutes of the fourth to extend their lead. Although
Olivia Pickett (Mount Airy, Md/Linganore High School) managed to put one in the back of the net with just under five minutes left, that would be all they could muster, as another pair of goals from McDaniel gave the Blazers a 19-12 loss on the road.
For the Opponent
Emma Miller led the team with six goals, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers.
Legacy finished the evening with four goals and one assist.
