Baseball falters at Alvernia

READING, Pa. – A close first game could not be repeated by the Hood College baseball team, as the Blazers were swept by Alvernia 6-5 in game one and 15-4 in game two after the games were postponed from March 23 due to rain.

At the Plate
Cameron Day (Hagerstown, Md./Clear Spring) went 2-4 in game one, scoring twice and driving one home.

Stephen Sommer (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun) finished the first game 2-4 with a run himself.

Alex Jenkins (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) hit a solo shot in game one.

On the Mound
Harrison Ludington (Woodbridge, Va/Forest Park High School) started the first three innings of game one, allowing one run off of three hits while striking out two.

Alvernia 6, Hood 5
Although Alvernia took the early lead in the first inning, Hood tied it back up in the top of the second, but were unable to take advantage of loaded bases to do any more damage.

The Golden Wolves retook the lead by storm with four runs in the bottom of the third, but the Blazers managed to cut their lead to just one run with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

With Alvernia adding another in the sixth inning, they took a 6-4 lead, with Hood needing to get two runners across to have a chance at extra innings. They managed to get one across to make it a 6-5 game, but that would stay the score as the Golden
Wolves stopped the tying run from scoring to end game one.

Alvernia 15, Hood 4
Game two was all Alvernia, as the Golden Wolves scored in every inning but the third, putting Hood in a 9-0 hole by the end of the sixth.

While the Blazers managed to plate four runners in the top of the seventh, Alvernia tacked on another five in the bottom half of the inning to trigger the 10-run mercy rule, sending Hood home early with a 15-4 loss and a weekend sweep.

For the Opponent
Luke Jones batted 3-3 with a walk in game one, scoring twice.

Quincy Esannason finished game two going 3-3 with two walks, scoring five times and adding an RBI.

Notes
Alvernia improves to 10-9 (3-3) on the season, while Hood drops to 12-6 (3-3).
