CHESTER, Pa. – A tough start for the Hood College baseball team could not be overcome later in the game, as they fell to Widener University 11-3 in game one of the three-game conference series.
At the Plate
Keegan Brennan (Lake Wynonah, Pa./Nativity BVM) went 2-2 with two walks on the day, smacking a triple and scoring once.
Jacob Saylor (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) hit 3-5 at the dish, driving in a run and scoring twice.
On the Mound
Frank Spaide (Bensalem, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) earned the loss starting on the mound, giving up seven runs off of eight hits in 1.1 innings.
How it Happened
The Pride wasted no time putting runs on the board, as they posted nine total in just the first three innings, forcing a Blazer pitching change in just the second.
Hood ended Widener's shutout bid in the fourth inning when Saylor made it around the diamond, but no more damage could be done before the third out of the inning.
After the fourth inning went by as the game's first scoreless one, both teams managed to plate another run in the sixth to keep the lead the same heading into the seventh, where the two sides again sent just one runner across the plate.
Although the Pride would not get any more runs the rest of the game, neither could the Blazers, as quick outs put an end to any comeback bid and finalized Hood's 11-3 loss.
For the Opponent
Jack Balcer finished 3-5 with five RBIs.
Nick Barenz ended the afternoon 2-3 with two walks, scoring twice.
Notes
Hood drops to 12-8 (3-4), while Widener improves to 7-12 (3-4).
