How it Happened
Set one started with early service success by the Mighty Macs' Josh McGurl to push an 8-2 lead after Immaculata had scored six straight points. Hood would then spread the floor to get
Russell Odor (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee),
Sean Seely (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage High School) and
Zander Kirchner (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) involved to pull them within four at 12-8. The back-and-forth ensued and even included another
Gael Bravo (Lanham, Md./Bowie High School) kill as he had also been busy evening setting hitters. Six different Blazers ended up with a kill in set one.
Set two started with a 5-2 lead in favor of the Blazers, but diminished due to attack errors created by Michael Prall to tie it up 7-7. Hood could get as close as tying the match 20-20 but found themselves down 2-0 after two sets.
Set three brought an early lead, but this was here to stay as
Charles Casas (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen High School) broke up Mighty Mac runs with points of his own. Immaculata scored three points during match point for Hood, but ended up losing set three via a bad set.
Set four was Casas time to heat up as he tallied three kills in-a-row twice to take the lead 8-7 and to extend the lead at 19-13. The Blazers took set four and now the pressure was on Immaculata to escape in five sets.
Set five included a 5-1 run to start for Hood, but Immaculata responded with four straight of their own to bring it 5-5. Thomas Pierce of the Mighty Macs went to work to set up hitters and another streak of points led to the taking of the final set.
