Homers at Home, Softball sweeps Marymount

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's softball team earns first doubleheader sweep of the year highlighted with Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) hitting two homers to break the career program record in game two and a Sammy McIntosh (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) grand slam in game one as the Blazers win 7-5 and 9-5 over Marymount.

Inside the Circle

  • Jordan Long (Middletown, Md./Middletown) got the win in game one tossing seven innings allowing five earned runs and striking out three on 108 pitches.

  • Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) got the win in game two tossing seven innings allowing four earned runs and striking out five on 147 pitches.

At the Plate

  • Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) went 3-for-3 in game two with two homers, four RBIs, and scored three runs. Pfleiger's home runs bring her career total to 26, a program record previously held by by Kayli Paugh in 2018 at 25 homers.
  • Sammy McIntosh (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) went 1-for-2 in game one with a grand slam and an RBI sacrifice fly. The home run was the first of her career.
  • Hannah Cohen (North Wales, Pa./North Penn High School) went 3-for-4 in game two with a home run and a double along with two RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Mallorie Hetzel (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) went 4-for-6 on the day with an RBI, a walk, and a scored run.

Hood 7, Marymount 5

  • There was no time to settle into this home double as Marymount's Samantha Burch homered to left field and put the Saints up 3-0.

  • No need to fear, in the bottom half three Hood batters walked to juice the bases with one out. Mallorie Hetzel (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) hit a grounder to shortstop but the fielder was unable to handle the ball and resulted in Gottleib crossing home.

  • Sammy Mcintosh followed Hetzel with a big swing over the left-center field fence to clear the bases and put the Blazers up 5-3.

  • McIntosh would hit a sacrifice fly in the 3rd inning to score Cohen from third to add another RBI to her total.

  • The Saints put traffic on the bases innings two through five and even had a two-run double negated by a batter being out of the batter's box but didn't return to the score until the sixth.

Hood 9, Marymount 5

  • Game two started similarly to game one as the bases loaded with two outs, a wild pitch scored a Marymount baserunner.

  • The Blazers responded in the bottom half of the first with a Pfleiger homer over the left-center field fence to knot the game up.

  • Saunders and Cohen shot singles through the infield and Hetzel drew a walk to keep the line moving. McIntosh cashed in her second RBI of the day via sacrifice fly and Kaelyn Blocher (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) would be hit by a pitch to end the first inning 3-1.

  • Moving to the bottom of the second, Pfleiger reached base before Cohen could find grass for a double and score Pfleiger. Cohen got her cardio in as Hetzel's base hit scored Cohen to extend the lead to four.

  • Two hit batters to start the third inning would lead to the three-run homer by Pfleiger. The centerfielder for Marymount drifted towards the fence and as she reached out her glove for the ball, the ball found the netting above the wall first for the home run and a 8-1 lead.

For the Opponent

  • Jenna Jew went 4-for-4 with a run scored in game one.

  • Samantha Burch went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in game one.
