FREDERICK, Md. – As the Hood College women's lacrosse team honored their graduating seniors before the game, those same seniors put on a show for everyone in attendance, leading the Blazers to a 17-11 win over Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opponent Alvernia.
Inside the Box Score
Mackenzie Demaio (Urbana, Md./Coronado (Calif.)) was red hot, scoring five goals and helping on one while picking up two ground balls and causing one turnover.
Abby Burnette (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) had herself a game as well, scoring a career-high four goals while also tallying two ground ball pickups and causing a turnover.
Julia Gregory (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Twp.) netted two goals and led the team with 11 draw controls.
How it Happened
Alvernia drew blood first just three minutes into the game, but it only took 33 seconds for Hood to equalize with a free position goal from Gregory. The Blazers turned it up a notch from there, scoring three more courtesy of Demaio,
Jaylen Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point), and
Katy Przybocki (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) to take a solid 4-1 lead after the first quarter.
The Blazers continued to add to their lead as Demaio got two more past the Golden Wolves' goaltender before Alvernia managed to get another point on the board. Hood scored another two to take a sizable six-goal lead, but a free position shot for the
Golden Wolves was converted with just 22 seconds left to cut the home team's lead to 8-3 at halftime.
Something must have clicked for the Golden Wolves in the locker room, as they went on a 5-1 run to start the second half and make it a one-goal game just over halfway into the third. Fortunately, the Blazers quickly realized they needed to swing the momentum back in their direction and decided to do so by scoring three goals before the period ended to go into the fourth ahead 12-8.
Although Alvernia scored the first goal of the final frame, two quick goals from Hood made up for it, even anticipating the Golden Wolves' next goal 25 seconds afterward to maintain their four-goal advantage.
Another three-goal run by the Blazers would put the game away for them, as Alvernia only managed to get one later in the game to make the final score a 17-11 victory in favor of Hood.
