Softball outroars Lions in final conference matchup

READING, Pa. – The Hood College softball team ended its Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth campaign with emphatic victories over Albright College, sweeping the Lions 9-3 and 10-1 on the road.

In the Circle
Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) got the nod in game one, allowing just three runs while striking out 10 batters.

Jordan Long (Middletown, Md./Middletown) won game two for the Blazers, allowing just one run off of five hits while whiffing six herself.

At the Plate
Gottleib finished the day 4-7 at the dish, hitting two doubles, three RBIs, and smacking one over the fence in game one.

Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) went a perfect 2-2 in game two, hitting a home run and accumulating three RBIs.

Hood 9, Albright 3
The Blazers got on the board right away, taking advantage of some fielding miscues to score two runs. It looked like the Lions would answer emphatically right away, scoring a run while still having two runners on base with no one out, but Hood managed to catch one girl trying to steal home, then got another to ground out before once again catching someone trying to steal a base and end the threat.

After taking a break from scoring in the second, the Blazers would send someone around the diamond in four of the final five innings with one in the third, three in the fourth two in the fifth, and one more for good measure in the sixth inning.

For their part, Albright would score one of their own in the third inning, but by the time they got to the bottom of the seventh inning, Hood had a sizable 9-2 advantage. Even though the Lions managed to once again load the bases, they were again only able to manage to get one run across, getting the third out to end the first game 9-3 in favor of the Blazers.

Hood 10, Albright 1 (6 inn.)
It was a much slower start for Hood, not managing to score for the first two innings while Albright plated the first runner of the game in the bottom of the second inning.

That would be the only lead the Lions would have the rest of the day, as the Blazers proceeded to put up 10 runs over the next three innings, and after Albright was unable to score anything in the bottom of the fifth inning, the mercy run rule was enacted, ending the game early and sending Hood home early victorious with a 10-1 win.

For the Opponent
Veronica Heckman finished 2-2 in the day's first game.

Kathryn Baptiste batted 2-4 in game one, tacking on an RBI.

Notes
Hood finished conference play with an improvement to a 13-23 (4-10) record, while Albright ends their season at 7-30 (1-13).

Up Next
The Blazers finish their season on the road with a doubleheader against Elizabethtown that was rescheduled from earlier in the season. These games will be Wednesday, May 1 at 3 and 5 p.m.
