READING, Pa. – The Hood College women's volleyball team got back into the win column with a vengeance against Albright College, sweeping the Lions 3-0 to get back into the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth playoff hunt.
Set Scores
The Blazers won 25-11, 27-25, 25-14.
Inside the Box Score
Ann Ofoegbu (Falling Waters, W.Va./Spring Mills) led the team with 10 kills, three aces, and 12 digs.
Maria Ricketts (Adamstown, Md./New Life Christian) finished with 25 assists on the night.
Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) also had three aces in the match, while Ricketts tied Ofoegbu with 12 digs.
How it Happened
The first set was all Hood, with Ofoegbu starting the match with back-to-back service aces to jumpstart the Blazers' offense to a 7-4 advantage. An 11-2 run for Hood gave it a 10-point lead and complete control, and with the Blazers leading 19-11, they took the next six points, with
Cam Madden (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) taking the final three kills.
Set two looked like it would be the complete opposite when Albright raced out to an 11-3 lead. After the two teams went back-and-forth for a few points, Hood used a 9-3 run to get within two points. Despite the effort, the Lions maintained their lead and were primed to tie the match at one with a 24-18 lead. Lesson one when playing the Blazers is to never count them out, though, and they made Albright pay for forgetting that, going on a 7-0 run to not only force overtime but take advantage at 25-24.
Although the Lions took the next point to tie things at 25-25, a service error and
Skylar Plante (Big Pool, Md./Clear Spring) kill completed the miraculous comeback and gave Hood a massive 2-0 match lead.
After a marathon of a second set, it looked like there would be another close one as both teams exchanged three-point runs, but it was clear Albright was gassed after the previous set, as it allowed the Blazers to go on a six-point run to take an 11-5 lead. Hood kept its foot on the gas, though, not allowing the Lions to get back into it and complete the 3-0 sweep.
For the Opponent
Neve Straff ended the evening with four kills, three aces, and 16 digs.
Valouria James had seven assists
Notes
Hood improves to 6-116 (2-3), while Albright falls to 4-16 (1-4).
