FREDERICK, Md. – A career-high in goals from
Julia Gregory (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Twp.) propelled the Hood College women's lacrosse game to a 17-11 win over Mount Holyoke College in a rare Monday-night matchup.
Inside the Box Score
Gregory totaled seven goals in the game, enough to be tied for sixth for most in a game. The attacker also added an assist and three ground balls.
Rachel Harper (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) and
Abby Burnette (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) each recorded a hat trick, with Harper adding two assists to for a five-point night.
Natalie Benincasa (Wallkill, N.Y./Valley Central) led the Blazers with five ground ball pickups, while
Emilie Vitalo (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) caused three turnovers.
Alivia Hosterman (Danville, Pa./Danville) made 13 saves in the win.
How it Happened
Hood got rolling fast, as Gregory scored just 26 seconds in to start a three-goal outburst in the first 90 seconds of play.
Although the Blazers could not keep up the insane pace of the first three goals, they would keep pace with the Lyons themselves, as the squads exchanged goals a few times to finish the quarter with a 6-3 Hood lead.
Despite Holyoke scoring first in the second to cut the lead to just two, the Blazers exploded with five straight goals, answering the Lyons' one other goal in the half with two of their own courtesy of Gregory, giving Hood a 13-5 advantage at halftime.
While Holyoke kept the score from getting to the 10-goal running clock rule, it made minimal headway in the third quarter, as both of its goals were answered by the Blazers later in the period to keep it an eight-goal lead heading into the final frame.
The Lyons decided to give Hood a run for its money, scoring three straight goals including one shorthanded to cut the Blazers' lead to just five. That would be as close as Holyoke would get, as Hood notched a tally of its own 16 seconds after the fifth, and both teams managed to get one more in before the final buzzer sounded for a 17-11 win for the Blazers.
