READING, Pa. – Baseball outdueled by the extra base hits of Alvernia in the opening game of the series 9-1 on Friday night. The Blazers marked five hits on the day.
In the Batter's Box
AJ Haines (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) led the Blazers with three hits, and their only run scored.
Quade Gannon (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) marked a triple,
Ty Broughton (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) notched a hit.
Rhett Robbins (Frederica, Del./Lake Forest) was hit by a pitch and drove in the Blazers only run.
On the Mound
Skylar Albright (Hendersonville, N.C./Hendersonville) allowed two earned runs on four hits and three walks.
From the Bullpen
Tim Rio (Manassas, Va./Unity Reed) pitched three innings in relief allowing four runs on eight hits.
How it Happened
Haines doubled in the gap and legged out a free 90 feet to third base to lead off the Blazers in the first, but would be left stranded.
Hood found trouble early with a opposing base knock and a fielding error that eventually led to a double to drive in two in the bottom half of the first.
Things were quiet until the bottom of the fourth where a walk and a single would be cleared by a triple to the right-center gap and doubling the Golden Wolves' lead.
Alvernia would strike once more with a leadoff double in the 8
th and more extra bases to convert baserunners into more plated runs. The 8
th would include three surrendered doubles.
The Blazers would not be shut out as Haines' second double of the day would put him in scoring position in the ninth. The bases would have traffic for the first time tonight and Robbins in a pinch-hit affair would take a pitch off the flesh to score Haines.
Notes
Hood falls to 6-12, and evens out at 2-2 in conference.
Alvernia improves to 8-9, and earns their first conference win for the 1-3 record.
Up Next
The series will continue Saturday, March 22 for the doubleheader hosted by Hood at FCC with first pitch at noon. The Blazers will also be honoring their 10
th anniversary of their baseball program during the day as well.
