Baseball caught under stampede of Golden Wolves

FREDERICK, Md. – Baseball held off the hungry Golden Wolves early in both ends of the doubleheader but were attacked in the later innings and dropped both ends 7-1 and 10-0 at Frederick Community College on Saturday afternoon.

In the Batter's Box

Quade Gannon (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) had two hits in game one.
James Gruenfelder (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermulen) had the only base knock for the Blazers in game two.
Jack Patterson (Boyds, Md./Northwest) fired a triple into the outfield and scored the only run for the Blue & Grey on the day.

On the Mound

Finn Scott-Daniels (Annandale, Va./Annandale) allowed seven runs on nine hits in game one.
Frank Spaide (Bensalem, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) pitched five innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five in game two.

From the Bullpen
Mason Sawyers (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) allowed only one hit and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Alvernia 7, Hood 1

Two quiet innings between both teams before Harrison Ludington (Woodbridge, Va/Forest Park High School) hustled out a double to lead off the bottom of the third. Gannon walked and put two runners on with no outs. A sacrifice fly to left field went wrong as the runner was deemed to leave early to negate the run and the momentum shot.

A triple and a double to lead off the fourth plated the game's first run in favor of the Golden Wolves and a sac fly would put the opposition up 2-0. The bottom half featured a bases loaded scenario with only one out. All ducks would be left on the pond and the score the same.

The Golden Wolves would pile on and extend the lead from converting early batters hit by pitch into runs scored and big innings.

Hood would avoid the shutout with Patterson's leadoff triple in the seventh inning and a line drive by Gannon shot back up the middle that hit off the hip of the pitcher and off the shortstop would score Patterson.

Alvernia 10, Hood 0

Smooth sailing for Hood through four innings with Spaide only allowing two hits and including a strikeout in each inning.

Gruenfelder singled into shallow left  in the bottom half of the third, but no dice on moving with the next two batters called out.

A leadoff double for Alvernia in the fifth was cashed in via a Jake Chapman single and broke the 0-0.

The bases were loaded in the sixth for the Golden Wolves and Spaide was relieved for Salisbury. The Blazers traded runs for outs with a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice by it still left a 3-0 deficit.

The top of the eighth would be the dagger with a pair of walks a sacrifice bunt to start and the line would keep moving until the run rule was reached.

For the Opponent

Tyler Weil-Kasper pitch four innings of one-hit baseball and had Ronald Kopcho take the hitless final four.
Jack Zabarsky and Timmy Hitchcock had multi-hit games in both ends of the doubleheader.
