Softball bruised by Mustangs

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Hood College softball team could not carry their momentum from the Alvernia series into their Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader against Stevenson, as the Blazers fell 5-4 and 8-0 in the conference matchup.

At the Plate
Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) batted 1-2 with a walk, a double, and three RBIs in game one.

Kara Heidlauf (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal High School) hit 2-4 with a double in the first game.

Lizzie McConnell (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) went 2-4 in game one.

In the Circle
Gottleib struck out two in the first game of the day.

Stevenson 5, Hood 4
The Blazers threatened in the top of the first, getting two runners in scoring position with just one out, but their scoring would have to wait until the second inning when a deep Gottleib double drove in the first two runs of the game.

After the Mustangs answered in the third and fifth innings to tie the game Hood retook the lead with a run in the top of the sixth, but Stevenson inched ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Although the Blazers managed to tie things 4-4 in the top of the seventh, they were unable to take the lead, and the Mustangs were able to walk it off just a few batters into their half of the inning.

Stevenson 8, Hood 0
The Mustangs took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and did not let the Blazers get anything going offensively, adding to their lead in the third before a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings pushed Stevenson over the edge for the mercy rule, ending the game early and completing the series sweep.

For the Opponent
Tessa Boswell went 2-3 with a triple and home run in game two.

Angelica Gurevich struck out six batters in their game one win.

Notes
The Blazers fall to 10-10 (2-2), and the Mustangs improve to 13-2 (3-1).
