OWINGS MILLS, Md. – A six-goal quarter for Middle Atlantic Conference Opponent Stevenson University proved too much to overcome for the Hood College men's lacrosse team, as the Blazers fell 17-6 in the battle of I-70.
Inside the Box Score
Jay Lanigan (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) scored a hat trick in the game.
Isiac Nafziger (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) had two assists on the evening.
Lucas Strand (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) picked up eight ground balls.
Calvin Morris (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) made 14 saves in relief of
Trent Leuba (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock).
How it Happened
Stevenson got on the board first just under two minutes into the game, but Hood stayed right with it with a response from
Brendan Smith (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area Senior High School) 20 seconds later.
Unfortunately, the Blazers were unable to respond to the next five goals from the Mustangs, as they faced a 6-1 deficit after the first quarter.
Quarter two was much slower than the first, with Hood scoring the first goal of the period more than halfway through. Stevenson answered a few minutes later though, and the teams headed into halftime with the Mustangs ahead 7-2.
Normal scoring resumed once the second half began, as Stevenson netted two less than four minutes into the third quarter. Lanigan would score on either side of the next Mustangs' goal to cut the Blazers' deficit to 10-4, but another goal for the home team restored its seven-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Hood would quickly score twice after Stevenson netted the first goal of the fourth quarter to make it a 12-6 affair, but that would be all the Blazers would get, as the Mustangs put five more shots home before the buzzer sounded to hand Hood a 17-6 loss.
For the Opponent
Gavin Gossen and Andrew Searing both had four goals each.
Tyler Merchant made six saves.
Notes
The Blazers drop to 7-3 (0-2), while the Mustangs improve to 9-3 (2-0).
