CHESTER, Pa. - The Hood College Women's lacrosse team dropped Saturday' afternoon's conference game, 13-4, against the Widener Pride.
Â
Inside the Box Score  Â
Â
Katy Przybocki (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) led all players with four caused turnovers and scooped up three groundballs.
Â
Avery Stanley (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) scored one goal and caused two turnovers.
 Â
How it Happened  Â
Â
Widener won every draw control in the first quarter. Hood was having trouble successfully clearing the ball, so it was hard to establish the offense. As a result, the Pride were able to string together quality possessions and finish the opening quarter with a 5-0 lead.
Â
A draw control win by
Abbey Bolingbroke (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) gave Hood an opportunity to run its offense, and the Blazers took advantage.
Rachel Harper (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) was able to find
Abby Burnette (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) for a goal that got Hood on the board. Determined to win, Stanley did it all, early in the second quarter, to help cut the deficit. She forced a turnover, scooped the groundball, and scored a goal to close the gap 5-2. Widener scored three-straight goals to build their lead back up. Following a timeout,
Julia Gregory (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Twp.) was able to score and help Hood stay in it. The Pride closed the first half with a pair of goals to enter the break with a 10-3 lead.
Â
Hood's first quarter struggles came back in the third quarter, despite multiple draw control wins. Widener took advantage of the Blazers' turnovers and failed clear attempts and turned them into goals on the other end. The pride controlled the game in the third quarter and finished it with a goal to secure a 13-3 lead.
Â
Each team appeared to have adjusted to the other in the final quarter, when goals were nearly impossible to come by. Harper set
Menna Salem (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) up to score the frame's only goal and cut Widener's lead. In the end, the Blazers weren't able to overcome the first half deficit; the Pride won 13-4.
