FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College baseball team avenged its Senior Day losses to Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opponent Eastern University, defeating the Eagles 9-6 as the away team in their home field of FCC.
At the Plate
Ty Broughton (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) went 2-4 with a walk and an RBI.
Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) also finished 2-4 with a walk, but added a stolen base and two RBIs to his total.
AJ Haines (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) finished the day 1-3 but drew three walks and smacked a triple to go with his RBI and stolen base.
Quade Gannon (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) and
Keegan Brennan (Lake Wynonah, Pa./Nativity BVM) both followed suit with the others and went 2-4 on the day, with Gannon hitting a double and Brennan swiping a bag.
On the Mound
Mason Sawyers (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) stayed undefeated on the season, allowing just five hits through seven innings of play.
How it Happened
The Blazers went to work right away, as Haines worked his first walk of the day and proceeded to move to second and third all without a ball being hit in play. A single from Stout scored him from there to give Hood the lead, and despite loading the bases with just one out, a line drive to the first baseman caught the runner by surprise and allowed Eastern to get out of the jam off the double play.
Well-executed small ball allowed the Eagles to tie the game in the bottom of the second, but the Blazers got right back to it in the third, juicing the bases and taking the lead off a sacrifice fly from
Amrit Brown (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) before the inning ended.
Hood kept things rolling in the third, taking advantage of some miscues from Eastern to send Brennan around the diamond and make it a 3-1 game for the "away" Blazers.
After a quiet fifth inning, Hood cracked the game wide open in sixth, with a leadoff double from Gannon sparking a five-run inning that put the Blazers ahead 8-1.
The Eagles put their nose to the grindstone over the next few innings to cut the lead to 8-5 heading into the ninth, but both squads would only score once more as Hood secured the 9-6 win.
For the Opponent
Jaden Taylor officially went 1-1 in the game, drawing three walks.
Notes
The Blazers improve to 10-21 (6-9), while the Eagles fall to 12-19 (5-10)
