READING, Pa. - The Hood College Women's lacrosse team defeated Alvernia 16-15, in overtime, in Saturday afternoon's conference battle.
Inside the Box Score
Avery Stanley (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) led the Blazers with seven goals.
How it Happened
Alvernia got on the board immediately with a goal in the first minute of the game.
Menna Salem (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) responded quickly to tie the game and get Hood's offense going. A routine draw control win from
Abbey Bolingbroke (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) eventually led to a goal from
Katy Przybocki (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) that gave the Blazers a slight 2-1 edge. Two minutes later, on a free position shot, the Golden Wolves scored to bring the game to 2-2.
Avery Stanley (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) scored late, giving
Abby Burnette (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) the assist, to secure the 3-2 lead.
Stanley picked up right where she left off, as she scored a goal within seconds, that gave Hood a 4-2 lead. Following Alvernia's response, Burnette scored on the ensuing possession. Once the Golden Wolves scored consecutive goals,
Julia Gregory (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Twp.) scored on back-to-back possessions to halt any momentum that was building. In the closing seconds, Stanley found the net to get her third hat-trick of the season. At halftime, the Blazers were up 8-6.
Any adjustments to Stanley and the Blazers offense didn't appear to work. Alvernia scored but Stanley scored two goals right away to keep the lead in the close 9-7 game. Burnette also made her presence felt and scored to propel Hood. She scored right after a Bolingbroke draw control. Following a yellow card from the Golden Wolves,
Rachel Harper (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) made her way to cage to score another goal for the Blazers. Alvernia scored in the final minute and approached the final frame with a 13-12 lead.
Alvernia scored early to go up by as much as two. However, Przybocki scored two more goals to keep Hood in the game. Stanley matched the Golden Wolves' response with another goal to even the contest 15-15, at the end of regulation.
Ellie Glawe (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) made a clutch save on the opening possession of overtime. Then, Stanley's career game continued, and she scored the game-winning goal to clinch the 16-15 victory for Hood.
