Inside the Box Score
Ann Ofoegbu (Falling Waters, W.Va./Spring Mills) totaled 11 kills on the day.
Maria Ricketts (Adamstown, Md./New Life Christian) finished the evening with 18 assists.
Alyssa Marshall (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) dug out nine balls in match two against Clinton.
How it Happened – Lynchburg
The Hornets started the match with a six-point run and controlled the pace of play from there, extending the Blazers' deficit to double digits with five points in a row to make it 13-13. Although Hood managed to take four straight points once Lynchburg got to 24, they were not close enough to stop it from taking the set.
Set two was all Hornets, as the Blazers were unable to earn a point until the score was already 11-0, and Lynchburg took care of business the rest of the way as it looked to complete the sweep.
Hood played significantly better to start the third set, hanging with the Hornets and going on a four-point run to cut its deficit to just 14-12. That would be as close as the Blazers could get, though, as Lynchburg followed their run with four straight of their own, taking seven of the final eight points later in the set to complete the 3-0 sweep.
How it Happened – Clinton
Both teams were evenly matched to start things off, exchanging points until the Golden Bears took four straight for a slight 9-6 edge. Although the Blazers countered with three straight of their own to tie things up once again, Clinton scored nine in a row to essentially ice the set, holding off any Hood attempts at a comeback and putting it in a 1-0 match hole.
While the Golden Bears scored the first three points of the second set, the Blazers began keeping pace with them, going back and forth until Hood went on a 6-1 run to leapfrog into a 10-8 lead. That lead would quickly be lost when Clinton scored six straight, and despite the Blazers cutting the deficit to just one at 17-16 late in the match, the Golden Bears won eight of the next 10 rallies to put Hood on sweep watch for the second match in a row.
With their backs against the wall, the Blazers came out for set three battling, staying just behind Clinton in a small 11-9 deficit almost midway through the set. That was when momentum shifted towards the Golden Bears, as they went on an 8-2 run and put Hood in a hole it would not be able to get out of, as Clinton won the set to cement the sweep and send the Blazers to 4-3.
