FREDERICK, Md. – A .207 hitting percentage was not enough for the Hood College women's volleyball team, as the Blazers fell in straight sets to Lancaster Bible College at home.
Set Scores
The Chargers won 25-13, 25-19, 25-20.
Inside the Box Score
Ann Ofoegbu (Falling Waters, W.Va./Spring Mills) led the Blazers with 11 kills.
Maria Ricketts (Adamstown, Md./New Life Christian) ended the evening with 25 assists and 12 digs.
How it Happened
Lancaster Bible took an early 4-1 lead to start the match, but a pair of kills from
Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) got kept Hood right in the fight. The Blazers hung in the fight for a while, but after being down 10-8, the Chargers would go on a 12-2 run to essentially ice the set, with Hood only getting one more
Cam Madden (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) kill before Lancaster Bible closed out the set and took a 1-0 match lead.
Although the Blazers found themselves in a 6-2 hole to start set two as well, they were able to gain some ground taking advantage of some unforced errors from the Chargers, with a kill from
Anna Daley (Erie, Pa./Harborcreek) cutting the deficit to just 8-6. Hood got within one after a kill from Ofoegbu and an ace from
Meara Mason (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) made it a 10-9 affair, and despite Lancaster Bible going on a 7-2 run immediately after, Hood managed to cut the lead to just 20-17 late. That would be as close as it would get though, as the
Chargers got the final five points they needed to take a 2-0 match lead.
Things looked bleak for the home crowd when the Blazers had a slow start to the third set as well, but after being down 6-3, they would go on a 7-2 run sparked by a pair of kills from Ofoegbu and jump out to a 10-8 lead. The set turned into a dogfight from then on, with Lancaster Bible retaking the lead right away but Hood constantly tying the game as it looked to force a fourth set. A kill from Ofoegbu and an ace from Mason got the Blazers within two late in the set at 21-19, but the Chargers managed to take four of the next five points, cutting the comeback short and sending everyone home unhappy.
For the Opponent
Lea Sareyka had 12 kills and nine aces.
Madeline Reed finished the match with 27 assists.
