Women’s volleyball swarmed by Hornets

FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College women's volleyball team were unable to build off of a second-set win against Shenandoah University, falling 3-1 in a non-conference match.

Set Scores
The Hornets won 25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 25-12.

Inside the Box Score
Ann Ofoegbu (Falling Waters, W.Va./Spring Mills) led the Blazers with 15 kills, three aces, and 17 digs.

Maria Ricketts (Adamstown, Md./New Life Christian) had the most assists with 28.

How it Happened
The match did not start off well for Hood, as Shenandoah pulled ahead 11-2 immediately. Despite the deficit, the Blazers refused to give up, going on a 6-1 run to get within a few points and managing to stay just three behind at 20-16. At that point they surged with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 21 and then again at 23, but the Hornets took the next two points to just barely take the set.

Hood flipped the script to start the second half by racing out to a 5-1 lead, but Shenandoah stayed with it and used an 8-1 run midway through to put the Blazers in a 17-12 deficit. It looked like they would go down two sets with the Hornets ahead 23-20 late, but a five-point surge from Hood helped steal the set and tie the match 1-1.

Set three was a rollercoaster as both teams took turns with sizable leads and crazy comebacks, with the Blazers taking a 13-10 lead before Shenandoah responded with a 6-2 run to take the lead again. After Hood tied the set at 16 though it was all Hornets, with the latter scoring the next seven points and putting the Blazers in a hole they could not get out of despite a late comeback attempt.

An early 5-0 deficit in the fourth set forced coach Katie Barnett to use an early timeout, and Hood responded well by making it a 6-5 game shortly after resuming play, but the rest of the set was all Shenandoah, as the Hornets took the set and handed the Blazers a 3-1 defeat.

For the Opponent
Hannah Hylton had 15 kills on the night.

Autumn Stroop finished the match with 25 digs.
