Women’s volleyball sunk by Dutchmen

FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College women's volleyball team could not push their opening winning streak to three against the Flying Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley College, falling in straight sets for the first time this season.

Set Scores
LVC won 25-20, 25-16, 25-18.

Inside the Box Score
Ann Ofoegbu (Falling Waters, W.Va./Spring Mills) led Hood with six kills.

Skylar Plante (Big Pool, Md./Clear Spring) totaled three aces and three blocks.

Maria Ricketts (Adamstown, Md./New Life Christian) finished the evening with 18 assists.

Katie Goddard (Keedysville, Md/Boonsboro) accumulated 12 digs in the match.

How it Happened
The first set was a tight contest from the first serve, with the teams exchanging points as the Dutchmen held a slight 7-6 edge. A 5-1 run from LVC forced a timeout from the Blazers, and whatever was said must have sparked something in the home team, as Hood began to fight back and make it a one-point affair at 21-20. That rally would end prematurely when the Dutchmen took the next four points to close out the set and jumped out to a 1-0 match lead.

Despite keeping pace with LVC at the start of set two, seven points in a row for the Dutchmen put the Blazers in a 12-3 hole early on. Another four-point swing by LVC made it a 20-9 deficit for Hood, and despite the Blazers going on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 21-15, they would not make it any closer before the Dutchmen finished things and began thinking about a sweep.

With backs against the wall, Hood came out hard with the first two points of the third set, including an ace from Ricketts. Although LVC tied it at two shortly after, the Blazers continued to keep up the pressure, not falling behind more than a few points.

Things began looking rough after the Dutchmen put up another four points in a row to take a 15-9 lead, but Hood kept their head in the game, taking four in a row later to be behind just 19-16 thanks to kills from Ricketts and Ofoegbu. Unfortunately for the home fans, that would be as close as the Blazers would get to forcing a fourth set, as LVC took six of the next eight points to complete the sweep and hand Hood its first loss of the season.

For the Opponent
Sofia Okronley led the Dutchmen with 23 assists.

Libby Lindeau had four total blocks in the match.
