FREDERICK, Md. – The field hockey team after Goucher's fast start chipped away down the stretch but fell 2-1 against the Gophers at Thomas Athletic Field on Wednesday night.
Inside the Box Score
Lillie Kodrin (Ijamsville, Md./Oakdale) scores her first goal of the season.
Ava Snelsire (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) marked three shots on goal and an assist.
Sydney Fleming (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) racked up four shots.
How it Happened
As the first quarter wound down, a restart of play resulted in a heavy hack off of a nearby Blazer and dribbled right in the heart of Hood's defense. Even after a valiant sliding save by the keeper, the ball remained in Gopher hands and eventually punched in for the early lead.
Vivian Onunga of Goucher legged out every ball and boasted her speed, eventually at the cost of Hood. The attack battled for the ball and won deep in Blazer territory, the cross hit of a Gopher stick and lofting over the last defender to be buried in the goal.
Even with the fast start for the opposition, Hood's defense limited the damage to two shots on the net during the middle periods while their offensive numbers skyrocketed with looks on goal.
After tallying their ninth corner of the game, Fleming fed the attackers and after a couple of attempts to strike, found Kodrin and her redirect found paydirt to break the drought.
The Gophers rarely made substitutions and with their endurance made every Blazer chance high energy and wore down the offense leading to the stalemate in the final minutes.
