Women’s basketball snuck up on by Golden Wolves

READING, Pa. – The Hood College women's basketball team was unable to pull away from Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth foe Alvernia University, falling 46-42 on the road.

Inside the Box Score
Jaylah Putman (Jacksonville, Fla./Long Reach) led the team with 13 points, going 3-6 from beyond the arc.

Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) finished the evening with nine total rebounds.

How it Happened
The Golden Wolves looked to take control of the game early, scoring the first two buckets of the game for an early 4-0 lead, but a Putman three-pointer put the Blazers right back in it. Hood built off that momentum, finishing the quarter on a 6-2 run to hold a slim 9-6 advantage.

Quarter two went even better for the Blazers, with Maya Gordon (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) and Kourtney Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) combining for an 8-2 run in the first four minutes. Maya Byrd-Gross (Onley, Md./Don Bosco) broke a two-minute scoring drought with a deep ball to make it 20-8 Hood, and with 1:47 left the lead had grown to 24-8. Despite Alvernia finishing the half on a 7-0 run, the Blazers still held a nine-point advantage heading into halftime.

Putman would strike again in the opening minute of the third quarter to return Hood's double-digit lead, but the Golden Wolves responded with a 15-3 run to snatch the lead away 30-29 with 2:39 in the quarter. After a Serenity Ritchie (Martinsburg, W.V./Martinsburg) free throw tied things back up, Alvernia would continue to add to its offensive breakout, as the Blazers found themselves behind 35-31 with 10 minutes to play.

Needing to find their groove again, a Ritchie jumper started an 11-4 run for Hood that saw Nyjah Harris (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) tie the game 42-42 with 1:37 left in regulation. Unfortunately, that would be the last time the Blazers would find the basket, as a Golden Wolves layup and pair of free throws ended up being the final scores of the game before the buzzer ended things 46-42 for Alvernia.

For the Opponent
Taryn Woodson and Alani White both scored 10 points for the Golden Wolves.

Jennah DeGout came down with 10 rebounds.

The Blazers shot 35 percent from the field and 24 percent from three, compared to the Golden Wolves' 28 percent from the field and 25 percent from beyond the arc.

Alvernia outrebounded Hood 43-39.
