Late Heroics Fall Short as Field Hockey Drops Shootout to Alvernia

READING, Pa.  – Field hockey drops second straight conference game to Alvernia University in overtime shootout falling to the Golden Wolves 2-1.

Inside the Box Score
Sydney Fleming (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) scored Hood's initial goal that granted the overtime run.

Ellie Dainton (Mays Landing, NJ./Saint Joseph Academy) had five shots total with two shots on goal.

Madeline Moreno (Mansfield, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) took three shots in the match while also recording one defensive save.

Allison Wallin (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) made two saves on the night.

How it Happened
Early in the match, Alvernia took charge pushing their momentum to the point where they received the first penalty corner of the game just five minutes in.  The Golden Wolves managed to capitalize off their first opportunity at goal and take the lead 1-0.

The second quarter was a more stagnate quarter as neither teams' defense decided to let up and no shot was recorded for the remainder of the quarter from either team. Heading into the third quarter, Alvernia still led 1-0.

Starting out the second half, both teams seemed to have game planned their offenses for the opposing defenses as both the Blazers and the Golden Wolves had quality looks on goals. Alvernia's Ava Michael struck first in the half opening 55 seconds, but she was denied by Moreno. Late in the quarter, the Blazers showed some of their own offensive capabilities as after a couple of penalty corner inserts by Fleming, Moreno and Dainton had two looks at the Golden Wolves' goalkeeper but were unable to knock one down.

With the score still at 1-0 in the fourth, Hood had to even out the score. After a green card warranting infraction by Alvernia's Caroline Martin the Blazers' gained themselves a man-up opportunity. Similar to the previous quarter, Moreno and Dainton had shot attempts but were turned away and blocked by the Golden Wolves defenders. The Blazers would not be turned away in this quarter however, as it would be none other than Fleming to send in the equalizer for Hood after a scrum succeeding Hood's sixth corner of the game. With Fleming's tying goal the match was sent into overtime.

Though the first overtime Hood's Dainton recorded the only shot, yet it was blocked and sent away. In the second overtime Alvernia was able to keep the ball in Hood's defensive end for the majority of the time, while racking up nine total shots with seven total penalty corner opportunities just in this period. The Blazer defense stood tall though denying each of the Golden Wolves' shots.

After both overtimes, the game was sent into a shootout where Alvernia managed to come out alive with a shootout score of 3-2 after Sofia Mollura snuck one past Wallin. In the end, the Blazers fell to the Golden Wolves with a final score of 2-1.
