CHESTER, Pa. – The Hood College Field hockey team battled with the Pride of Widener University but ultimately dropped the contest in overtime with a final score of 3-2.
Inside the Box Score
Ava Snelsire (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) netted the first goal for Hood.
Bianca Scally (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) scored the second goal for the Blazers and assisted on Snelsire's goal.
Madeline Moreno (Mansfield, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) had two defensive saves and recorded a shot in the match.
Harper Buettner (Haymarket, Va./Gainesville) picked up a save on the day.
How it Happened
In the first period of play, the Blazers started out strong, taking the first couple shots of the game as
Kymara Beijer (Zandvoort, Nl./Kennemer Lyceum) had an early chance with the Widener keeper but was denied by Emma Korenthal. Although Hood put on early offensive pressure, the Pride was granted five penalty corners this quarter. It would be on their fourth corner where they capitalized as Anabella Cenci opened the games scoring.
The second quarter began similar to the first as Hood's early offense put immense pressure on the Widener defense but unfortunately for the Blazer's they were not able to get the ball rolling in this half.
The Blazer offense did not take their foot off the gas heading into the third quarter. In just the first three minutes, Scally was able to find a streaking Snelsire and even out the score at 1-1.
Keeping up the pressure, Hood opened up the fourth quarter with another goal to take the lead. This time Scally decided to take it herself as she danced through the Pride defense and shot a worm burner from deep past the goalie. With a late Hood lead of 2-1, the future looked bright for the Blazers but with less than five minutes left in the game, Widener somehow managed to fit in two penalty strokes before the end of regulation. The Pride managed to add on to the scoresheet with their first penalty stroke as Harlie Bekely struck a shot past Buettner.
With the score at 2-2 at the end of regulation this game was sent into overtime. Spending little to no time off the game clock, Widener's Cenci ended up being in the right place at the right time as her teammate Brie Mallozzi was able to find her on the backside, and the Pride took the game 3-2 in overtime.
