Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Joel White, Graduate Assistant

Women’s basketball hounded by Golden Wolves

FREDERICK, Md. – A positive second half was not enough to get the Hood College women's basketball team back into their game against Alvernia University, falling 49-39 to the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth rival.

Inside the Box Score
Kourtney Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) led the Blazers with nine points.

Amya Pulley (Reistertown, Md./Western Tech) finished the evening with seven points and six rebounds.

How it Happened
It took almost a minute for points to be scored in the game, but once Alvernia broke the ice, it was pretty even for the next several minutes. A three-pointer from Maya Byrd-Gross (Onley, Md./Don Bosco) got Hood close at 10-7 with 3:30 left in the quarter, but the Golden Wolves surged toward the end and put the Blazers down 15-9.

There would be even longer between the start of the second quarter and the first points scored, as a Nyjah Harris (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) layup made it a four-point game almost three minutes in. A free throw from Harris got Hood within three, but that would be as close as the Blazers could get after Alvernia finished the final three minutes of the half with an 11-5 run to head to halftime behind 31-18.

Both teams came out into the third quarter and again had difficulty making a shot, with a free throw from Taryn Woodson of the Golden Wolves scoring the first points in nearly three minutes once again. Hood managed to play the rest of the quarter well enough to avoid going down anymore, outscoring Alvernia 10-5 in the final half of the quarter and making it a 41-30 game with a Pulley buzzer beater.

While the offense did enough to get within eight points thanks to a Serenity Ritchie (Martinsburg, W.V./Martinsburg) three-pointer with just over a minute to play, the Blazers would not get another shot through, falling 49-39 at home.

For the Opponent
Jennah DeGout passed 1,000 points in her career tonight, finishing with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Taryn Woodson brought down 11 rebounds.

Analysis
Alvernia shot 32 percent from the field and 17 percent from three-point range, while Hood shot just 28 percent from the field, but 40 percent from beyond the arc.

The Golden Wolves outrebounded the Blazers 52-30.

Alvernia's bench outscored Hood's 23-10.

Notes
Hood falls to 3-19 (0-11), while Alvernia improves to 12-10 (7-4).
