WINCHESTER, Va. – A strong first quarter from the Hood College men's lacrosse team could not be sustained, as the Blazers fell to Shenandoah University 11-8 on the road.
Inside the Box Score
Regan Tesche (Avondale, Pa./Salesianum School) scored three goals for Hood.
Lucas Strand (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) won 13 faceoffs, picking up seven ground balls.
Calvin Morris (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) made 12 saves in the loss.
How it Happened
It did not take long for the ice to break, as Shenandoah got on the board just 26 seconds into the game for an early lead. Although Hood was unable to capitalize on its man advantage shortly after the Hornets scored, Tesche made sure the Blazers would not be down long with a rocket to tie the game 1-1 just over four minutes in.
Shenandoah scored again just 90 seconds later to retake the lead, but
Isiac Nafziger (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) one-upped Tesche and responded on Hood's very next possession to make things square once again.
After the heat to start the game, there would be a relatively "slow" period with more than four minutes between goals. Once Tesche got his second goal of the night though, the floodgates opened, as the Blazers totaled three goals in 51 seconds to take a 5-2 lead. Both teams would get a goal in the final five minutes of the quarter, and Hood found itself holding a 6-3 lead after 15 minutes.
Comparatively, the second quarter contained much less fireworks, as it took more than seven minutes for either team to score. Unfortunately, it would be the Hornets that found the back of the net, and a second goal with 1:17 left would round out the scoring for the first half, cutting the Blazers' lead down to 6-5.
Tesche completed his hat trick with the first goal of the second half, but Shenandoah responded with three straight to put Hood in an 8-7 hole. With just over a minute to play in the third,
Danny McElroy (Frederick, Md./Saint James) would capitalize on the man advantage for his first collegiate goal and tie the game once again heading into the fourth quarter.
An early goal from the Hornets put the home team back on top, and the Blazers would not be able to respond, failing to register a shot on goal for the remainder of the quarter before the buzzer sounded to finalize the 11-8 loss.
For the Opponent
Xavier Parker led Shenandoah with three goals.
Liam Arnsmeyer finished with two goals and three assists.
