Inside the Box Score
Charles Casas (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen) finished the day with 20 kills.
Cameron Nugent (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) had 28 assists in the afternoon.
Dane Lyons (Taneytown, Md/Francis Scott Key) led the Blazers with nine digs.
How it Happened – King's College
Hood found itself down big early on, as the Monarchs started the match scoring the first seven points. The Blazers would find a bit of an offensive groove and even get close to King's midway through at 14-8, but a 7-1 run from Monarchs put the thought of a comeback to rest as they took the first set.
Set two started much better for Hood, who found itself ahead 4-2 early thanks to kills from Joel Wants and Casas as well as a block from
Ben Foster (Lexington, Md./Homeschooled). King's tied it just two points later, and although the Blazers would take two of the next three for a slight advantage, the Monarchs responded with a 9-2 run to jump ahead 14-8. Hood managed to stay an arm's length away for a while, but with King's ahead 16-11, the Monarchs pulled off another 9-2 run to clinch the set.
The third set saw a decent amount of fireworks in the first half, with the Blazers jumping out to a 5-3 lead but King's responding with four straight immediately after. Both squads exchanged points for several rallies afterwards, but after Hood made it just a one-point deficit, the Monarchs went on a 7-1 run to pull ahead 17-10. The Blazers would manage to get within five points a handful of times, but could not find enough to avoid a 3-0 sweep.
How it Happened – St. John Fisher
Despite the Cardinals scoring the first three points of the match, the Blazers hung around and were behind just 6-4 before an 8-1 run by SJFU put them well behind. Kills from Casas and
Blake Catts (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen) made it a seven-point affair at 15-8, but that would be as close as Hood would get before the Cardinals went out and took the set.
The Blazers used a pair of kills from Casas early to keep up with SJFU 3-3, but six straight points for the Cardinals got Hood in a funk it would not get out of, as it registered back-to-back points just once before SJFU went up 2-0 in the match.
Unfortunately for the Blazers, set three would not go their way either, with the Cardinals exploding for a 13-1 run that made it 17-4 in the blink of an eye. Although Hood got back a handful of rallies in a row, the early gap was too wide to prevent a second sweep on the day.
