Men’s volleyball swept by Falcons

GRANTHAM, Pa. – A positive hitting night for the Hood College men's volleyball team was not enough to upset No. 6 Messiah University, as the Blazers were swept 3-0.

Set Scores
The Falcons won 25-13, 25-19, 25-17.

Inside the Box Score
Charles Casas (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen) led Hood with nine kills.

Cameron Nugent (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) finished the night with 23 assists.

Sean Seely (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had six digs.

How it Happened
Despite Messiah taking the first point, the Blazers were able to rally back and take a 3-2 lead early. Five straight points for the Falcons would erase that lead though, and they would eventually put Hood in a 10-5 hole. The Blazers were able to make it a three-point game with a 4-2 run, but Messiah took the next six points, and Hood would not be able to respond and keep the home Falcons from taking the first set.

A kill from Joel Wantz (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) put the Blazers up early, and they were able to maintain a one-point lead for several rallies, but with the score tied at 5, Messiah put together a 9-2 run to surge ahead. Not to go down quietly, Hood pulled out a 4-1 run to get within four points at 18-14, but it could not break that barrier and get closer before the Falcons closed out the set to take a 2-0 match lead.

Unlike the previous two sets, the Blazers would not get an early lead, as Messiah started things with three kills and an ace to put Hood in a 4-1 hole. Although it would pull close with a small 3-1 rally to make it a 7-5 game, the Falcons responded with a 9-2 run to widen the gap to an amount the Blazers would be unable to recover from, ultimately falling in the set and the match.

For the Opponent
Connor Himelfarb led Messiah with 10 kills.

Adam McGarvey had 27 assists and four aces.

Up Next
Hood takes the long trek up to Hoboken, N.J. for a Middle Atlantic Conference match against No. 4 Stevens University Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m.
