WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Hood College men's lacrosse team matched
its season-high with eight goals but the Blazers came up short
against the host Catholic University Cardinals Thursday afternoon,
falling 11-8 in a Capital Athletic Conference game.
Hood falls to 0-9 on the season, 0-4 in the CAC, while the
Cardinals even their record at 4-4 and improve to 2-3 in the
conference.
Blake Rust and Anderson got the Blazers on the board early to
put Hood up 2-0 midway through the first quarter. But three
different Cardinals found the back of the net as Catholic closed
the quarter owning a 3-2 advantage. After Mike DiGiesi made it 4-2
at the start of the second quarter, Jeff Balinsky ripped one past
Cardinal keeper Greg Kavazanjian to cut the deficit to 4-3 at the
11:06 mark.
Later in the period trailing 5-3, Sofiane Lazar netted his fifth
goal of the season off a pass from Ben Lukacs to make it 5-4. The
Blazers then cashed in on an extra-man opportunity when Will Oconis
assisted on Anderson's second goal of the afternoon to knot the
game at 5-5. But Catholic's Mike Groh netted his third tally of the
game just before the half to give the home team a 6-5 edge at the
break.
Catholic scored three unanswered goals to start the second half
and assume a 9-5 lead with 7:52 to play in the period. The Blazers
and Cardinals traded goals the rest of the way as Hood's last score
came at the 5:21 mark of the fourth quarter.
Anderson netted his second hat trick of the season with three
goals, while Lazar and Rust added two apiece. Oconis notched a
school record with four assists and Sam Hofmann recorded 20 saves
in goal for the Blazers.
